John Piper: Mary's Magnificent God

Good News of Great Joy, Daily Readings for Advent By John Piper

Mary's Magnificent God - December 2

“My soul magnifies the Lord,
and my spirit rejoices in God my Savior,
for he has looked on the humble estate of his servant.
For behold, from now on all generations will call me
blessed; for he who is mighty has done great things for me,
and holy is his name.
And his mercy is for those who fear him
from generation to generation.
He has shown strength with his arm;
he has scattered the proud in the thoughts of their hearts;
he has brought down the mighty from their thrones
and exalted those of humble estate;
he has filled the hungry with good things,
and the rich he has sent away empty.
He has helped his servant Israel,
in remembrance of his mercy,
as he spoke to our fathers,
to Abraham and to his offspring forever.” —Luke 1:46–55 FULL POST

Operation Blessing International Disaster Relief 'Advance Team' En Route To Washington, IL to Assess Tornado Damage

(Photo: ABC 7 Chicago)

NEWS RELEASE - Operation Blessing International

VIRGINIA BEACH, VA (November 18, 2013) – The humanitarian organization Operation Blessing International (OBI) has sent an advance team to the Washington, IL area today following deadly tornadoes over the weekend.

The OBI team is currently en route and will arrive this afternoon to assess the damage and to determine if the charity will deploy its full disaster relief team and equipment, and possibly coordinate volunteers. In early 2012, OBI coordinated more than 3,000 volunteers and over 23,000 volunteer hours for relief efforts in partnership with the Harrisburg, IL Emergency Manager and Illinois State Emergency Management (IEMA) following tornadoes in Harrisburg, IL.

Jody Herrington-Gettys, director of domestic disaster relief for the charity, said, "The news reports we've seen of the damage vary widely, from a few neighborhoods to hundreds of homes destroyed. We decided to send our advance team to see what the situation is on the ground and then we'll make a decision as to whether we deploy from here or not."

Should OBI decide to respond, it will send its Mobile Command Center and a construction trailer full of tools for debris removal and supplies for volunteers. FULL POST

ACLJ and 230K Americans Urge Appeals Court to Protect Ground Zero Cross

NEWS RELEASE - AMERICAN CENTER FOR LAW & JUSTICE

ACLJ & 230K AMERICANS URGE APPEALS COURT TO PROTECT GROUND ZERO CROSS

(Washington, DC) - The American Center for Law and Justice (ACLJ), which focuses on constitutional law, today submitted an amicus brief on behalf of more than 230,000 Americans urging a federal appeals court to protect a Cross Memorial at The National September 11 Memorial & Museum in New York City. The brief urges the appeals court to uphold a decision by a lower court that dismissed a suit filed by an atheist organization attempting to remove the Cross.

“This flawed legal challenge represents a dangerous and unprecedented attempt to literally rewrite history and cleanse the record of a historically significant artifact,” said Jay Sekulow, Chief Counsel of the ACLJ. “As the district court correctly held, it is entirely appropriate and lawful for the curators of a museum to acknowledge the Cross’s actual, historic role by placing it in the September 11 Memorial Museum. A museum has the freedom to display religiously-themed artifacts of historical or artistic significance without running afoul of the Constitution. We urge the appeals court to affirm the decision of the district court which rejected this bizarre legal challenge.” FULL POST

Springfield, Mo. – November 12, 2013 – In response to Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda), Convoy of Hope has allocated more than 3 million meals for distribution to survivors in some of the country’s hardest-hit areas.

“Because of our feeding initiative in the Philippines we have food in country to share with survivors of the typhoon while continuing to feed the nearly 21,000 children who are enrolled in our initiative,” says Kary Kingsland, senior vice president of Global Initiatives for Convoy of Hope. “We also have several shipping containers in port, on the water or being prepared at our World Distribution Center in Springfield, Missouri. The need is great and we want to help those who are suffering.”

According to Kingsland, along with Convoy of Hope’s in-country teams, a veteran assessment team will be in the Philippines tomorrow morning. The team will assist with immediate response work and help plan the organization’s long-term response.

Though the distribution of food has already begun, adds Kingsland, additional items such as hygiene kits, tents, shoes and much-needed water filtration units will be distributed. FULL POST

BGEA: Youth Lead the Way with Billy Graham's My Hope America

Preparations for perhaps the largest evangelistic event in U.S. history continue for Billy Graham and his ministry team with just three weeks to go before the famed preacher's message "The Cross," filmed from his home in North Carolina, is planned for broadcast through multiple platforms.

The event, scheduled to coincide with Graham's 95th birthday, is named, "My Hope America with Billy Graham," and is a nationwide effort to reach people with the Gospel of Jesus Christ, states the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association. Unlike traditional large-scale evangelistic events, the outreach is designed for Christians, whether they be a pastor, ministry leader, or lay person, to invite guests and host a viewing in a chosen venue, possibly even a home.

"In 'The Cross,' Billy Graham delivers his much-anticipated new message, filmed from his home in North Carolina, on the meaning of the cross – the same message of God's love he has faithfully preached for more than 70 years," BGEA spokesperson Brent Rinehart told The Christian Post via email. "Woven within Graham's message are the faith stories of two popular musicians: rapper LeCrae who overcame addiction and the pull of the gang lifestyle to see his life changed by an encounter with Jesus; and former Flyleaf lead singer Lacey Sturm who fought depression, hopelessness and suicidal thoughts only to be rescued by the love of a Heavenly Father and the hope that comes through a relationship with His Son." Pastor Chuck Smith (June 25, 1927 - October 3, 2013)

So we are always of good courage. We know that while we are at home in the body we are away from the Lord, for we walk by faith, not by sight.

Yes, we are of good courage, and we would rather be away from the body and at home with the Lord. 2 Corinthians 5:6-8

Message to Those Attending Harvest America

God’s love is meteoric,
his loyalty astronomic,
His purpose titanic,
his verdicts oceanic.
Yet in his largeness
nothing gets lost;
Not a man, not a mouse,
slips through the cracks.
-- Psalm 36:5 (The Message)
