Trophies of Grace

I have a few old, decaying trophies from my youth. Some have had the placards fall off long ago. They are very old but when I received them I was very proud of them. I was determined to build a display case for them but I never did. Now I that am old I am not concerned anymore with trophies. These were earned just after the earth was cooling and while the Dead Sea was still alive. Seriously, God is going to have His own trophies but these will be trophies of His grace and these will never corrode or perish. What are these trophies? They are those whom God has purchased by the blood of the Lamb of God, Jesus Christ. These “trophies” are to be displayed for the glory of God.

In Ephesians we read about a wonderful future but these Scriptures are written in the present tense. “When we were dead in trespasses, [He] made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus” (Eph 2:5-7). One thing that I love about the Book of Ephesians is that God calls things that are to be as already being. That is the way God speaks in all of His Word, the Bible. Even prophecy is history written backwards. He is “the God who gives life to the dead and calls into being things that were not” (Rom 4:17). He has the power to bring about what He wills. For one thing, He has already “raised us up together” and already “made us sit together in the heavenly places.” Having been made to “sit together” is indicative that our works are completed because “The work of God is this: to believe in the one he has sent” (John 6:29). I am not saying that we don’t have any works to do but our works don’t get us to heaven…they follow us there. Just as Jesus sat down at the right hand of the Father, we too are already seated with Him.

Can you imagine the idea that we are already seated in the heavenly places with Christ? Well, you don’t have to imagine it…we already are! It gets better. In “the ages to come” we will be a showpiece of “the exceeding riches of His grace.” In the language used to say the “ages to come” its meaning is “for all ages” or for “ages without end.” This speaks of eternity. Indeed, we are the “workmanship” (Eph 2:10) “of His grace” (Eph 2:7) and those who are in Christ will be His trophies. These trophies of grace will be displayed for all eternity and for all to see “His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.” This is not a temporal thing like a decaying trophy but a permanent display for eternity and this display - a display of those who have placed their trust in Christ and been redeemed - are to be shown off by God. The boasting is not ours but is to the glory of His “exceeding riches of His grace.” This is one trophy that won’t end up in a garage sale.
