United We Stand - Divided We Fall!

text size A A A

When I was a teenager in the late 1960’s, one of my favorite songs was “United We Stand – Divided We Fall”. Have you ever heard it? During the Jesus Movement, I accepted Christ as my personal savior and learned that God wanted all Christians to learn to live in love, unity and harmony together. But sadly, I have frequently observed just the opposite.

Listen to the song, United We Stand – Divided We Fall here,

As I have prayed for the United States of America, it has become tragically evident that America is best described today as “The Divided States of America.” Perhaps never before in US history have there been so much mean spirited politics and divisive language with the exception of the American Civil War in the mid 1800’s. America is sharply divided. But perhaps the most prolific divisiveness is displayed in American religion and politics.

One of the largest denominations in America, the Baptists, “split” back in 1996. For example, Texas’ 2.7 million Baptists dealt a severe blow to the Southern Baptist Convention today, withdrawing $5 million in funding on grounds the denomination is becoming too conservative (http://abcnews.go.com/US/story?id=95186&page=1).

The Trayvon Martin trial had nothing to do with racial injustices according to the defense, the prosecution and even Trayvon Martin’s parents. But that didn’t keep Al Sharpton and the Reverend Jesse Jackson from bringing racism into the national debate, causing many to protest across the country and playing the “race card” of divisiveness. Even after the re-election of Barack Obama, the first African American US President, many still feel that America has very serious racial problems.

Of course, all one needs to do is to turn the TV or radio on to hear mean spirited political mud-slinging and debates. I think that it’s accurate to say that America is in a civil war of cultures. The Secular Humanist worldview and the Christian worldview are clashing, but for the first time in American history, the Secular Humanist worldview is overwhelmingly winning the battle.

Some “blacks” are blaming “white” racism, while some whites are accusing blacks. Even African American pastors are preaching about the Trayvon Martin trial, saying that the Florida verdict was wrong and unjust. And many nonblack people are saying that justice was served. So who is right? What’s the real problem here? What’s happening to the United States of America?

Now that we have considered what men have said, let’s see what the God of the Bible has to say.

“Man looks at the outward appearance, but God looks at the heart.” (1 Samuel 16:7)

“But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, in the spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.” (Romans 8:29)

“For our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms.” (Ephesians 6:12)

I submit to you that America does not have a racial problem. It has a spiritual problem that is filled with our own selfish, greedy thoughts and ways, rather than with God’s Word that enables Christians to know people (of whatever race) by the spirit through God's love, while learning how to see and discern good from evil.

Consider what Hebrews 5: 11-14 says in the KJV…

11 Of whom we have many things to say, and hard to be uttered, seeing ye are dull of hearing.

12 For when for the time ye ought to be teachers, ye have need that one teach you again which be the first principles of the oracles of God; and are become such as have need of milk, and not of strong meat.

13 For everyone that useth milk is unskillful in the word of righteous: for he is a babe.

14 But strong meat belongeth to them that are of full age, even those who by reason of use have their senses exercised to discern both good and evil.

For the past 40+ years, many Christians have been so busy building their own “kingdoms” and doing things their way, it appears that they have forgotten that “Christians” are supposed to be about the Kingdom of God and doing things God’s way.

"And Jesus knew their thoughts, and said unto them, Every kingdom divided against itself is brought to desolation; and every city or house divided against itself shall not stand:" (Matthew 12:25)

Jesus knows our thoughts too!

Do you want to see America united again?

Are you praying for a 21st Century Great Awakening or Reformation in America?

As a young man, I heard a wise man pray, “Lord send us revival and let it begin with me.” Songs have even been written about this. And, I’m doing by best to pray the same. How about you?

If history repeats itself, the United States will cease to exist on/or around 2017 - her 241st birthday. Why? …Because no democracy in world history has lasted longer than 241 years. What democratic country lasted for 241 years? Greece.

That is why it’s time for all Christians to humble ourselves, pray, seek God’s face and turn from our wicked ways!

And then, God will hear our prayers, forgive our sin and heal our land (2 Chr. 7: 14).
