Thousands, maybe millions of Christians stand up in various meetings across this country, state their name, and say they are an alcoholic. They do so hoping it will help them overcome the struggle they face.
Now before you call me a blasphemer for saying this about Jesus, I know Jesus would never attend a meeting and make this statement. For several reasons: it is impossible for Jesus to be an alcoholic. First: Some making the statement are claiming they have a disease and Jesus had no diseases. Second: Jesus was free of any sin, the spotless lamb that died to pay for the things we have done and are doing. And the list could go on and on. Jesus was not an alcoholic.
But that leads me to the following thoughts to stimulate your mind:
First: Jesus would never stand up in front of a crowd and say such a ridiculous statement. But what about Noah (Gen 9) drunk uncovered in his tent? And Lot (Gen 19) who was so drunk he passed out while his two daughters had there way with him (this is a classic example of an "alcoholic"). If these two lived concurrently would God send them to a meeting to repeat this statement? Hello, my name is Lot and ....ok you get the point.
Second: Sin. When I read the stories of Lot and Noah (and every other drunk I know including my former self) I have always understood that these men sinned! Galatians 5:21 list the works of the flesh and lists drunkenness right alongside idolatry, witchcraft, adultery, fornication and murder. We could try to split hairs and say that drunkenness and being an "alcoholic" are two different things and that being drunk is a sin but being A drunk isn't, but really? Are we that blind that we just can't fess up to our sin?
Third: I am amazed how far psychologists and counselors (some Christian) go these days to assist people to live with their sins.
Fourth: When is it OK to verbalize failure and defeat (in light of the power of the Almighty God) in hopes that it will help us claim the Victorious Christian life Jesus gave his life to provide? Regardless of the error of the statement, by the mere stating this as fact, these poor souls are doomed forever.
Using humor to prove a point lets just say....... I have six sons; one of them is not too smart. I am trying to help him. Every morning I have him stand in front of the mirror and repeat - "Good morning, my name is Darl and I am stupid" It doesn't seem to be working, so maybe if I went to the school and found a bunch of stupid kids I could start a club. Maybe you could help me with a name for the club?
