Thanks to all those who participated in the Seven Men Book Giveaway. The winners of the four copies of Eric Metaxas' book will be announced Monday.
In this book Metaxas examines the leadership qualities and personal character of seven famous men: Eric Liddell, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Charles Colson, Jackie Robinson, John Paul II, George Washington and William Wilberforce.
Liddell was a famous runner that refused to run on a Sunday at the 1924 Summer Olympics. He later won a gold medal and his life story was made into the movie Chariots of Fire.
Bonhoeffer was a German pastor, theologian and author. Bonhoeffer opposed Adolph Hitler's government and was executed for participating in a plot to kill Hitler.
Colson was a key figure in President Richard Nixon's administration. After serving time in prison, Colson started Prison Fellowship.
Jackie Robinson broke down racial barriers by playing for the Brooklyn Dodgers for ten seasons starting in 1947. Robinson's actions prepared America for key civil rights advances that would take place in the 1960s.
John Paul II served as pope of the Catholic Church for 26 years and is remembered for opposing communism. John Paul II worked to improve communication between the Catholic Church and leaders of other world religions such as Islam and Judaism.
Besides serving as an army general and as America's first president, George Washington was also a man of mysterious faith. He sometimes mentioned the role of "Providence" in America.
Wilberforce is one of the most inspiring Christian political leaders to ever live. He worked for over 40 years to abolish slavery throughout the English empire. Wilberforce opposed debtor prisons and also supported efforts to send missionaries around the world.
