Are you teaching your children about money?

I have a question for all dads and moms. "Do you want your children to know more about money then you did when you left your parents home?" Up to this point every parent I have asked that question has said, "Sure" or "Of course" or "Absolutely!" Unfortunately the follow up question has left most with little to say. "What are you doing to make that happen?"

I was able to travel to Poland in March to speak at an international fathering forum in Warsaw. The trip was amazing but God used the people to touch my heart. As I presented my workshop the dads in attendance were incredibly focused on what I had to say. Their desire to learn was amazing! Unfortunately they have a challenge that is not prevalent in our country, a lack of information. In the United States we have plenty of information but struggle with allocating the time. And in many cases it is not even the lack of time but intentionality. Teaching our children about money is not a part of our daily routine, vocabulary or thought process.

As I ended the workshop I challenged the dads to write down two things they would commit to teaching their children about money. Throughout the rest of the forum the men that attended my workshop approached me to tell of their new commitments. Most were basic in nature but most importantly they were a beginning!

As for the question of "What are you doing to make that happen?" I am here to encourage you to become intentional with teaching your child(ren) about money. I want to ask you the same question I asked the fathers in Poland. Will you take the first step and commit to two things that you will begin to teach your children about money?
