The conference that my ministry is hosting this year has a unique perspective. As an apologetics ministry, a defense of the faith is never far from our mind. But what is the best way to mount that defense? Is it logic? Argument? Evidence? These all have their place, but the Scriptures seem to think that the best defense is a good offense: proactively and deliberately raise your children in the faith.
The traditional tools and methods of apologetics will certainly come in handy, but they'll come without much of the hostility, cynisism, and hyper-skepticism that is often witnessed in many 'targets' of apologetics. Instead, the children begin from a position of trust. In their relationship with their parents, they will have seen that the great concern is truth. The parents have no intention of hurting or harming or deceiving or tricking their children. You can't get this kind of trust relationship with people on the web. You can't even get it with your neighbor, probably. But within your family...
Is it no wonder, then, that the family is under attack at all levels? Divorce rates are as high among Christians as outside the Church. Sex outside of wedlock is rampant both in and outside of the Church. Even what constitutes 'marriage' is being redefined. What will the ultimate effects be on a society that has supped deeply from the cup of laisse-faire sexuality? Nevermind that- what will the effects be on the individual souls who make up that society?
We are talking about faith formation here, not cheap moralizing. In a society filled with fractured families we see fractured people. As the product of divorce myself, I know personally the wounds that are inflicted when a marriage shatters. No secular wishful thinking can change the fact that children thrive in the secure setting of an intact and stable family. There is a price to be paid for the libertine libido, and it is paid for by the young who are the result of those behaviors. Some, who are born into brokenness, others who are scalded by chemicals in the wombs of their mothers.
Connecting the dots, then, we can see that if traditional marriage stands then the job of the evangelist will be eaiser. If we wish to defend the faith we will defend the family. In defending the family, we will defend the faith.
Our conference begins tomorrow, April 7th and runs through April 9th. We have many fine speakers lined up and since the conference takes place over the Internet, you can attend from anywhere in the world. I do hope to 'see' you there!
