In a previous post on politics, several months ago, in which I observed the fading of Herman Cain - I predicted that perhaps Romney and the Mormons will have their day in The White House. This appears closer to becoming a reality. Still, to expect that a Mormon on the most powerful political seat will have no implications for the spiritual climate is naiveté. Yet another term with Obama will confer even greater boldness to advance the liberal socio-political agenda that trivialises God and relegates faith to the departmental or optional tick-box to be analysed and leveraged like the many other issues that must serve humanity as politicians determine. The Obama years saw the early stages and wider acceptance of recasting freedoms biblically typified as abominations as equivalent to civil rights and the first inconclusive aborted attempts at evangelising the nations with this alternative gospel. We can expect even more deftness in pushing these philosophies in the next years.
The polls continually show that the liberal press expectedly overwhelmingly favour an Obama presidency and it is suspected that the conservatives who have said “anything but Obama” - will inevitably consider a mormon - despite many recent attempts to whitewash what this really means - a tough sell ...too hard to swallow... for their already battered conscience. One must at least congratulate Obama on his charismatic surefootedness, skill and panache reminiscent of another JFK in navigating issues to bury old adversaries like Osama Bin laden and Gaddafi and to progress the much desired quasi-enlightenment against newly perceived internal foes ... portraying Biblical Christianity as a strange virus for which some sort of inoculation must be hurriedly discovered and a new post-modern strain imposed ...new priests ( a la Oprah) are being recruited. Eventually, it may not be the subtle spiritual points or the questions around Mormonism - but instead the unpredictable turns and twists in the economy that determine how the majority “mammonist” generation will decide.
"Between the devil and the deep blue sea" is an idiomatic expression meaning a dilemma— i.e, to be faced with a choice between two undesirable situations. But God reverses even the irreversible and is not caged by manipulations that appear to impose a scenario. Having lived in a far more complex multi-faith environment and being accustomed to its imperfections ... I have learnt even through many extremely perplexing circumstances that God still always has His way.
The faithful Joshua observed the walls of Jericho and in exasperation looked up ... and he sees the Captain of the Host of Heavens – Jesus with His sword unleashed. He asks a foolish question which we often all ask...
Joshua 5 And it came to pass, when Joshua was by Jericho, that he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, behold, there stood a man over against him with his sword drawn in his hand: and Joshua went unto him, and said unto him, Art thou for us, or for our adversaries? And he said, Nay; but as captain of the host of the LORD am I now come. And Joshua fell on his face to the earth, and did worship, and said unto him, What saith my lord unto his servant? And the captain of the LORD'S host said unto Joshua, Loose thy shoe from off thy foot; for the place whereon thou standest is holy. And Joshua did so.
The significance of loosing the shoe from one foot – according to the law - is familiar to Joshua.
Deuteronomy 25 Then the elders of his city shall call him, and speak unto him: and if he stand to it , and say, I like not to take her; Then shall his brother's wife come unto him in the presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his face, and shall answer and say, So shall it be done unto that man that will not build up his brother's house. And his name shall be called in Israel, The house of him that hath his shoe loosed.
This is an open admission of inability to do what someone else must do - a complete surrender of rights to our kinsman Redeemer also foreshadowed in the restoration of Ruth.
Ruth 4 Now this was the manner in former time in Israel concerning redeeming and concerning changing, for to confirm all things; a man plucked off his shoe, and gave it to his neighbour: and this was a testimony in Israel. Therefore the kinsman said unto Boaz, Buy it for thee. So he drew off his shoe.
The personal, political, economic, socio-cultural and all other battles we face are not about us, nor about our rights and preferences but reflections of unseen warfare and eternally predetermined judgments and conclusions that the unimpeded Host of Heavens have instructions to administer. Joshua was advised to step back and allow the real battle to commence.
Rather than fret, we can hand over the shoe to Jesus ... our Husband and Redeemer who lives forever and reigns and rules in all the affairs of men whether this is seen, appreciated or not. Simply worship, trust and obey Him in all things including your choice and see the walls of Jericho fall exactly where and when they were so ordained.
