Disarming Innocent and Wicked People

text size A A A

Sweeping New Gun Control laws are soon to be rolled out in the US as the "too frequent" shooting deaths of "kids on street corners of Chicago" is referenced in the case for reinstating the federal assault weapons ban, requiring criminal background checks for all gun sales, providing mental health services in schools and allocating more funds for hiring of more police officers, as well as 23 other, more immediate executive actions on gun policy.

Improving policing and making weapons less available seems the right thing … but this policy also disarms people in an already toxic culture not about to change tomorrow. The policy of putting more power and responsibility in the hands of government has been known to facilitate a future totalitarianism. A disarmed people tend to be vulnerable where a mindset of violence is already high and killings unusually prevalent. Will law enforcement be overwhelmed in the transitional period?

In the Bible narration on Dinah, the daughter of Jacob, we read of how the brothers of Dinah – sons of Jacob were incensed at her rape by Shechem the son of Hamor the Hivite and came up with a plan asking them to drop all their weapons and come under the protection of covenant by accepting to be circumcised so the Hivite Prince could marry their sister Dinah. All was well until the Hivites were most vulnerable… and then …

Gen_34:25 And it came to pass on the third day, when they were sore, that two of the sons of Jacob, Simeon and Levi, Dinah's brethren, took each man his sword, and came upon the city boldly, and slew all the males. 26 And they slew Hamor and Shechem his son with the edge of the sword, and took Dinah out of Shechem's house, and went out.

A vulnerable unarmed people will have to learn to trust and put their lives and property in the hands of a central government that may one day evolve to an undesired state, intolerant and even outright demonized.

I recall movie depictions of the times of tribulation and the last days and see better how it was possible for the anti-christ to gain control so quickly … and perceive the unusual challenge of scenarios when governments become the enemy of the people. I have no doubts that there will be a different peace but while we pray for healing of the mentally unstable even as dangerous weapons are kept from them …we must pray against rabid legal enforcement that seeks someday to force-fit society into its new post-modern mould.

In the past, many societies that witnessed religious persecutions and unmentionable ethnic violations and genocides understand that these ills thrive best with hidden and eventually open official sponsorship as official law enforcement weapons come into the grip of a different insanity … ask the Jews in Auschwitz or the Nigerian Christians in the Jos Belt. They also thrive when targets have no immediate means and methods of defending themselves.

Jacob was saddened at the revenge of Simeon and Levi … two wrongs do not equate to a right … in future verses he is commanded to go to Bethel …where he seeks a fresh consecration.

Gen 35:2 Then Jacob said unto his household, and to all that were with him, Put away the strange gods that are among you, and be clean, and change your garments:

The strange gods are the powers behind forces that twist the minds of citizens … they also as easily twist the machinery of government enforcement agencies. Pray urgently for a fresh consecration ... Pray for your nation.

Christ, the Prince of Peace says "Come unto me ..."
