Do You Love Money?

text size A A A

The Bible says the love of money is the root of many kinds of evil. Many will agree but are not as clear on what the love of money is and how to spot it. How can I know if I love money and not God? Mammon, the god of money lovers, cannot be loved together with God. So the Bible teaches. We can only love one, hating the other. Here are five ways to check yourself.

1.If you have a strong overriding drive to make cheap money, make it quickly and with as little effort as possible …then you probably love money. If you have often lost money due to careless risks - targeted by scams and which has put your family at risk – then you most likely are gripped by this vice. Effort, industry, research, preparation and due care which creates balance and slows down the process of wealth making are rudiments of Godly wisdom. Do you seek God’s wisdom in handling finances or always seeking money making shortcuts – even justifying these with scripture?

Pro_16:20 He that handleth a matter wisely shall find good: and whoso trusteth in the LORD, happy is he

2. Listen to your conversation … do you believe wealth is the measure of God’s love or acceptance of your life? You have a confidence based on inaccurate presumption, luring you to seek less the face of God. You have fallen in the trap meant for those who love money. Those who love God know that the only way to confirm the pleasure of God is by constant unabated devotion, checking and adjustment at the mirror of the word of God. Do you know and love the law and word of God … if you are not a daily student of the Bible …instead, spending much more time and saturating your thoughts with business … then you do love Money.

3. There is a Wall Street crowd and other crowds who make investments based on a “herd” mentality. When you find your money decisions typically reflect the crowd, it is most likely you worship and love what the crowd loves …money. Doing often the opposite of the crowd - buying when others are mainly selling seems odd … but when you can prayerfully receive insights from God and obey His word which runs against the grain - it suggests you love God. The love of God causes us to restrain ourselves in many ways that the crowd does not care about. God will also not permit certain approaches and investments. If you are unaware or disinterested then it proves where your heart really is.

2Co_5:14 For the love of Christ constraineth us …

4. How much do you give to the work of God especially that which God loves the most …financing tracts, crusades …anything that contributes to saving of souls. Check all your outflows. How much has gone to God in the last three years. We assume you are active in your Church, but how much do you give to the work of God in other Churches, to the poor and hungry. Do you tithe? If your total giving in all forms is less than 20% of your inflows over the years, the likelihood is that you love money. If your giving is not increasing, it suggests your love of God is going cold.

Deu_8:18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God: for it is he that giveth thee power to get wealth, that he may establish his covenant which he sware unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

5. Is your study of the word restricted to money issues. You only read a Business man’s Bible and you have mastered the curriculum on money matters. But those who love God know that there is a total counsel of God…every aspect of our lifestyle must adhere to His law. We are not going to be tested on the Money subject alone …but on a wide variety of subjects … our marriage, our responsibility to family, our love for others, Christian service, forgiveness, preparation for his return, obedience and a myriad of topics. There is no Christian specialist …If you are a specialist on money matters knowing little else in the word, then you are a lover of money. Many who say they love God, seeking hidden specialization on money soon find themselves caught in secret fraternities and cults to gain influence … even using Bible principles in isolation of a total consecration - soon finding themselves in the grip of darkness. Those who truly love God, fear Him and set themselves apart for Him … loving His presence in worship.

You may have less than a thousand dollars and still be a lover of money … and you may have a billion and be a lover of God. God is not against comforts and luxury. The Bible describes His eternal City as paved with gold and precious stones. If you do not care to be part of His eternal preparations, it proves you do not love Him.

Psa 139:23  Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: 24 And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.
