Living without AIDS – Bible perspective

text size A A A

The worst form of physical recession is a gradual wasting of the body ... disease that consumes flesh and deteriorates the body through rampant, uncontrollable fever and lack of nourishment, causing the eyes to fail and life to ebb away. This is exactly what AIDS does.

Leviticus 26[15] and if you despise My statutes, or if your soul abhors My judgments, so that you do not perform all My commandments, but break My covenant, [16] I also will do this to you: I will even appoint terror over you, wasting disease and fever which shall consume the eyes and cause sorrow of heart. (NKV)

Ecclesiates 1[9] The thing that hath been, it is that which shall be; and that which is done is that which shall be done: and there is no new thing under the sun.

Is AIDS in the Bible? Are there warnings against this plague? Are there solutions? We already know that the two most common drivers for this ailment are sexual immorality and sharing of sharp instruments for tattoos/ incisions (still very prevalent in some cultural traditons) or injections ( in a more modern context)...involving flow of blood/access to the blood stream. Today tattoos are also considered trendy amongst youths.

Deuteronomy [14:1] Ye are the children of the LORD your God: ye shall not cut yourselves, nor make any baldness between your eyes for the dead. [2] For thou art an holy people unto the LORD thy God, and the LORD hath chosen thee to be a peculiar people unto himself, above all the nations that are upon the earth.

A study of the various plagues in scriptures brings out an interesting dimension in a particular plague. Lot (a model of family laxity/love of pleasure and sensuousness) unlike Abraham (a symbol of firm control over his household) ...had joined himself with the abominable civilisation of Sodom with all its familiar evils. His two married daughters we learn never consummated their marriage.
Genesis 19[8] Behold now, I have two daughters which have not known man ... [14] And Lot went out, and spake unto his sons in law, which married his daughters, and said, Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy this city. But he seemed as one that mocked unto his sons in law.

The end of Lot was bad (weak fatherhood ends badly). He was made drunk (another pointer to his weak nature) and both confused lusting daughters slept with him producing the Moabite race and children of Ammon. We wonder where Lot's wife was in all this.

God warns the children of Israel over the years to stay away from these races...however we read a strange story centuries later when the Israelites came out of Egypt as a strong invincible race. Numbers [22:1] And the children of Israel set forward, and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho. [2] And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. [3] And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many: and Moab was distressed because of the children of Israel.

It was not possible to bring the children of Israel under enchantment and curse them through divination. The weapon of Moab shifted to their historical strength " Harlotry in all its ramifications rooted in their ancestry in Sodom ". This worked like a charm.

Numbers [25:1] Now Israel remained in Acacia Grove, and the people began to commit harlotry with the women of Moab.... The Moabites engaged in gross sexual acts during idolatrous feasts ( modern parties)...and it was common to make incisions (modern tattoos) as a sign of submission to their god and to gain its protection. (Also recall that Elijah mocked Baal worshippers to cut themselves I Kings 18 [27] And so it was, at noon, that Elijah mocked them and said, "Cry aloud, for he is a god; .... [28] So they cried aloud, and cut themselves, as was their custom, with knives and lances, until the blood gushed out on them. )

The result of these orgies with Moab was a strange plague that continued and wasted 24,000 people leaving Moses perplexed ... perhaps also reflecting the exhaustion or helplessness of today's doting religious leadership as they observe God's children seduced into sickness and disease through immorality that can no more be publicly cautioned. Perhaps the winners are the medical/pharmaceutical industry - cashing on products to manage the plague.

A strange incident however stops this plague ... Numbers 22[6] And indeed, one of the children of Israel came and presented to his brethren a Midianite woman in the sight of Moses and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, who were weeping at the door of the tabernacle of meeting. [7] Now when Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose from among the congregation and took a javelin in his hand; [8] and he went after the man of Israel into the tent and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her body. So the plague was stopped among the children of Israel. [9] And those who died in the plague were twenty-four thousand.

The courage to boldly confront immorality is lost in a generation that has confused "correctness" with "permissiveness with lethal implications" We also note that God blesses Phinehas unusually for his stance. Numbers 25[11] "Phinehas the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, has turned back My wrath from the children of Israel, because he was zealous with My zeal among them, so that I did not consume the children of Israel in My zeal. [12] Therefore say, ‘Behold, I give to him My covenant of peace;

Let me summarise with 3 concluding points.

1. AIDS is not new...and has a history linked to permissive family traditions and weak fatherhood...and absence of true "Biblical" men to call issues to order.
2. Sexual immorality in all its forms and well known genres is abominable and not without direct consequence to society ... civilisations can vanish as a result of an obsession with the body, sensuousness and a culture that says " anything goes"
3. Boldness to speak and act (especially with minority voice) at personal risk against evils that offend God will be rewarded by God. The solution of distribution of condoms, making abortions and sexual counselling available in schools is a laughable parody mocking divine truths and reflects the weakness and cowardice of leadership to confront real issues and the solution i.e.strengthening families and fathers (a vanishing species) and restoring moral education.

God does not hate Moab and God does not hate you. To cement this truth, Ruth - a Moabitess found grace and was led to Boaz who became her kinsman redeemer. Ruth is one of the Bible heroines found in the ancestry of Jesus....Jesus is our Kinsman Redeemer...all can come to Him...as we are....lost in sin. But we must call sin "sin" and receive grace and help to come out of it.

I John1 [7] But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin. [8] If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.
