The Magic of Oscar Vanity

text size A A A

Another year has passed and once again screen deities have convened for their annual honors gala. A celebration indeed of the best of glamour, art and talent converging in magical screen offerings that have captivated billions of viewers. I am not a fan of movies and I probably watch much less than the average, the only awardee movie (best actor) I had seen, of the many honoured, was "The Theory of Everything" which for me was a disappointingly distorted but sympathetic portrayal of the life of the celebrated atheist - Stephen Hawking, given that I had taken the trouble to research the subject before going to the cinema.

The “Theory of Everything” did portray the local church as the ideal spot to hunt for an adulterous affair … and also another award winning performance of “Glory” from “Selma” was heralded and applauded tearfully - without any consideration for whom the glory was intended for – the Almighty God.

I remember another award recipient once thanking the “god” of the Oscars…and as giant-size glittering gold idols shine all over the hall and smaller versions distributed to winners for their mantels, one can not help remembering Moses when he came down from the mountain to observe pagan festivities around a golden calf.

Exo 32:8  They have turned aside quickly out of the way which I commanded them: they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and have sacrificed thereunto, and said, These be thy gods, O Israel, which have brought thee up out of the land of Egypt. 9 And the LORD said unto Moses, I have seen this people, and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people:

There seems to be a deliberate liberal effort to celebrate any and everything that opposes Godliness and dilute any attempt to uphold that all glory belongs to God ... sharing that glory with any and everyone or cause. Instead themes like feminism, human and reproductive rights, gender neutrality etc are the new doctrines. The Triune God is perceived as only another element of the diversity which must embrace a myriad of other shades of belief and leanings. "Humanity must look out for themselves" is the new mantra.

God has appropriately diagnosed the disease of modern mankind …and it is stiffneckedness - another word for “haughty, proud, stubborn, formal, self-important, self-confident …” …meaning to be set in an obstinate, arrogant and imperious rebellious posture against God. Modern mankind, like their ancestors, have attributed the work of their hands …their art, music, entertainment, government, science, talent and gifts as the source of their joy, peace and prosperity. They forget the songs of the birds of the air, lavish flora and fauna in many undiscovered fields and depths exhibit far more beauty and unfathomable creativity. The stars and lights of the galaxies will effortlessly outshine, in every regard, all the stage lights, candelabra and grand chandeliers.

But then the curtains close and all will go home and wash off the false eye lashes and make up ... take off the gowns and phoney accents and return to the reality of the life they live under the jurisdiction of the wicked one who only steals, kills and destroys … discovering eventually that none of the thrills and amusements that humanity has contrived will ever create genuinely enduring and lasting pleasure.

I congratulate the talented winners of the 87th Oscar awards ceremony … and wish I could find a way to let each and every one of them know that they would only be true winners, more than conquerors, only if they had Christ as Lord in their lives.
