Martin Luther King Jr Speaks at Southern Seminary

text size A A A

As Martin Luther King Jr Day comes to end, I would like to recognize several of King's speeches.

In 1961 Martin Luther King Jr spoke on racial tensions in society at the Southern Baptist Convention's Southern Seminary. Tony Kummer, a Southern graduate, has posted an mp3 file of King's speech which can be heard here.

The Southern Baptist Convention sided with slavery during the civil war but has since apologized for its actions and last year elected Fred Luter as its first black president.

King is best known for his speech I Have a Dream and two of the sentences became a rallying cry for the civil rights movement:

"I have a dream, that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin but by the content of their character. I have a dream today!"
