This weekend the President and his wife encouraged Americans to volunteer and serve in their communities.
The National Day of Service website says," Meaningful community service isn’t a one-time commitment—it’s an ongoing pledge to take action in your community on a regular basis."
Churches across America participated in service projects this weekend.
Volunteer Maggie McGuire attends Fourth Presbyterian Church in Chicago. McGuire described her motive for serving to the Chicago Tribune. "I'm doing it because I believe that decent, affordable housing is a basic right."
NJ.com reported that the North Jersey Vineyard Church helped victims of Hurrican Sandy by replacing "mold-covered walls and insulation inside trailers that were submerged during a flood at the height of the storm."
