Today the United States Supreme Court ruled that part of the Defense of Marriage Act is unconstitutional in a 5-4 decision.

The case United States v. Windsor revolved around an inheritance tax dispute after Thea Spye died and her wife Edith Windsor was subject to taxes that traditional married (husband and wife) couples wouldn't be subject to.

Justices ruling against DOMA:

Stephen Breyer, and Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Elena Kagan, Anthony Kennedy and Sonia Sotomayor

Justices supporting DOMA:

Samuel Alito, John Roberts, Antonin Scalia, and Clarence Thomas
