Characteristics of a Mature Believer & Follower of Christ...Taking Christianity Into the World
Spiritual growth is personal. It is between you and God alone. It is not for another to judge or evaluate. Whether you are a new Christian or a Believer for decades, whether you grew up on a Godly home or one full of sinfulness and pain, God is there to meet each and every one of us exactly where we are without reservation and with love, compassion and tenderness. However as I have continued my Walk in my faith I continue to strive to learn more about this God that I love and how I came to be created and the guiding principles by which He wants me to live my life. Though the path for every Believer is different, there are some attributes that merit consideration when striving to become more like Christ.
Personal Study. Just as when we were children our parents read aloud to us and then we learned to read or our own, similarly at some level should we start to investigate God and the Bible for ourselves. Though I believe much of our spiritual strength comes from meeting together, especially if done with the confines of a small accountability group, our knowledge of who God is begins to grow exponentially when we take a proactive role in studying God's word for ourselves. Though the act of reading the entirety of the Bible did not make be a better man/Believer, it did help me begin to better understand who God is so that I might better model my life to be like his.
Community Service. John 15:8 acknowledges that Believers will show fruit and indeed that it is by their fruits they will be known. For if we love Christ with all of our heart and soul we will not be able to keep our hearts silent and the spirit of Christ will shine through our actions by our service and deeds for others. Jesus said it so it must be so, we are to be known by what we do to further the kingdom of Christ.
Church Involvement. "Belonging" to a church and not just its attendance is an integral part of your life as a Believer. Church membership, involvement with items beyond just the Sunday service are all tenants of a mature Believer. Though church attendance would be suggested by virtually all, church involvement includes your active engagement. "Doing church" is a participatory event.
