Atlanta CPA on Passing Along the Gift...Taking Christianity Into the World
Many factors affect the difficult career decisions our students must make. This is true whether a student is in grade school, high school or college. Personal contact with a practicing professional in the field is helpful because it makes the idea of being in an certain professional or trade field. Willingness to share your knowledge and insights certainly indicates your commitment to the your profession and the advancement of understanding your chosen field. This helps students get a feel for what they might enjoy doing and to carefully contemplate a chosen field of study and career path.
For my own career, I was blessed to have interacted with Dr. Gary Luoma, who was initially the Head of the Accounting Department at Emory University in Atlanta, GA and then at the Accounting Department Head at Georgia State University. I had originally applied and was accepted at Emory University, which is where there I initially met Dr. Luoma. I, nor did Dr. Luoma, did not know it at the time that both he and myself would soon join the ranks of Georgia State University with him becoming my first and best accounting professor there, (Dr. Buckner, you were a close second). In the early stages of our tutelage there Dr. Luoma guided us in the order of which we should conduct our academic and professional careers and from all angles, it appeared to be steeped in personal first-hand knowledge and wisdom. To that end initially Dr. Luoma guided us to order our personal lives so that we might be better able to focus on our schooling and told us, that the best accounting jobs would go predominantly/almost exclusively to the students with the top grades. Encouraging us to all graduate with honors, obtain our CPA license ASAP and to work with the large international CPA firms, we followed his prompting and advice into a successful career. Many of us are still reaping the benefits from his judicious wisdom and counsel.
I share this not to bring any attention to myself, as God alone deserves any and all accolades, but to share with you, what you might do in the life of others. By sharing with others the advantages of your good choices and perhaps the avoidance of some of our mistakes and common pitfalls, you can do much to pour your life into others passing along gifts to future generations!
