2011 Personal Income Tax Returns are due on April 17th, 2012. The due date is April 17 instead of April 15 because April 15 is a Sunday and April 16 is the Emancipation Day holiday in the District of Colombia.

The April 17, 2012 (the deadline will be applicable for:

• IRS Personal Income Tax Return or Form 1040, Form 1040A and Form 1040EZ.
• Georgia Personal Income Tax Return or Georgia Form 500.
• Extension Forms (Form 4868) and Payments to the IRS.
• Extension Forms (Georgia Form IT 560) and payments to Georgia. When a taxpayer receives an automatic extension of time to file their Federal return, Georgia will honor that extension. No penalty for late filing is assessed if the Georgia return is filed in accordance with the terms of the Federal extension. However, the tax must be paid by the statutory due date as an extension is only for the filing of the return and does not extend the time for paying the amount of taxes due throughout the year and through the due dates of filing of the return.

The IRS is anticipated to begin being ready to process Electronically filed returns on January 17, 2012. Work with your CPA throughout the year as both the IRS & Georgia require taxpayers to pay in their tax obligations as the monies are earned. In pulling your information together to prepare your returns a quick review of your prior years returns is a great place to start along with a well drafted and comprehensive checklist such as the one that can be found on our web site at http://www.hiscpa.com/newclient.html
