Virtual Reality Gets Real

text size A A A

Virtual reality used to be a far-out, vague concept confined to sci-fi stories. Like artificial intelligence, it was something that was always just over the horizon. Now, however, that horizon is coming closer every day. Gaming headsets and glasses now highlight virtual reality systems that are actually available to average gamers and video consumers. And as with most breakthroughs in video and audio, the pornography industry is also taking advantage of the expanded boundaries of VR.s of life including taking online dating on sites such as eHarmony and Match to a whole new level.

The concept of virtual reality does not go too far back in history;it was invented at the beginning of the 20th century with the goal of creating a complete virtual environment indistinguishable from the genuine article. At this point, however, we still have a long way to go to bring that to fruition. For now, we must make do with 360-degree visual support as well as immersive audio. Some systems offer limited tactile feedback through gloves or the game controller itself, but this is a far cry from the kind of fine touch envisioned by virtual reality’s creators. Believe it or not, there are companies working on encoding olfactory information, smell, so it can be experienced by someone at the other end of a video call.

The key lies in integrating all these technologies to create a fully-immersive experience. One day, you may be able to wear a suit that can transmit touch sensations throughout your body with speakers that, in combination with a pair of glasses, bring an environment to life around you. Though there are rumors of work in this area from a number of high-profile companies, all indications are that this kind of complete virtual reality is still decades away. However, as computers become smaller and smaller and wearable technology continues to improve, significant progress is likely to be made in the coming years.

Gaming is undoubtedly the engine behind most recent advances in VR, but it’s far from the only arena in which the technology is useful. VR has also become quite popular in the real estate industry, allowing people to perform a virtual walkthrough of a property with a 360-degree visual spectrum. If you want to know how the stage will look from a particular seat in a venue, virtual reality can give you a clear view. Medical professionals have jumped aboard the VR train as a way for them to get an up-close look at a patient from hundreds or thousands of miles away.

There’s another industry that’s particularly active in the VR space – pornography. Just as porn was a pioneer of film, a bevy of companies such as VRSmash are taking full advantage of current virtual reality technology. Now anyone can use a wide array of VR systems to experience pornography like never before possible. And you can bet that as the technology matures, pornographers will be on the forefront adapting cutting-edge VR elements for use in ever-more sophisticated productions.
