The Feminism of 2 Peter 2:19

text size A A A

The 2012 election was not merely about economic issues or about national security. The 2012 election reflected two very different and opposing views about the social and cultural future of America. Although the Democrats like to consider themselves champions of women, it was the Democrats who created a campaign called "Rock the Slut vote" Although the Democrats forced Rush Limbaugh to apologize for calling Sandra Fluke a slut, the Democrats then turned around to call her a slut as well as to call millions of women sluts as though it was a good thing.

When Rush Limbaugh called Sandra Fluke a "slut" for having so much sex that she was going bankrupt to afford birth control, there was a massive public outcry from the liberals that forced him to apologize and to say that Sandra Fluke was not a slut.

So, the word "slut" is an offensive and derogatory toward women. But only in certain contexts, according to the Democrats. By our Christian standards, this takes a rather bizarre twist and their lady part obsession comes out in the open.

After condemning Rush Limbaugh for the word "slut," the liberals quickly created a "Rock the Slut Vote" campaign in which they called Sandra Fluke, themselves, and each other sluts. As soon as the so-called feminists forced Limbaugh to recant calling her that word, the feminists declared him right all along!

Susan McMillan Emry is tired of the word “slut” being a slur.

The 56-year-old mother of two is the founder of “Rock The Slut Vote,” a website aimed at reclaiming the derogatory term and registering women to vote in November.

In order for a word to be reclaimed, there needs to be a redefinition. What is the new definition? A "sexually-empowered woman"? Does this mean a woman who has sex with numerous men? If that is the case, then the new definition is the same as the old definition. One liberal said:

"I think 'slut' is offensive, that's why we're trying to own it and make it ours," said Debra Shore, an Illinois delegate from Chicago.

The word is offensive. I feel disgusted and ashamed that women would even want to call themselves that word. Why are you branding around an offensive word? It fails to convince anyone that the word should be used in a benign manner. Just tossing out the word everywhere does nothing to redefine or "reclaim" the word. Slut still means slut regardless of how often it is used. Just as vagina continues to describe a female reproductive organ despite the repetitions of the word vagina. Simply repeating the word does not redefine it and does not reclaim it.

There was a man at the check-out aisle one day. When he pulled out his wallet, I noticed a large sticker over his wallet that said, "get some sluts." Only now, it becomes difficult to determine if the comment is intended to offend or to encourage. Is it misogynistic or feminist? Difficult to determine when so many women call themselves sluts. Because liberal feminists want that word to be positive, is the sticker on that man's wallet a good thing or a bad thing?

And this is the new danger facing women: an inability to distinguish between empowerment and misogyny.

"For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who actually escaped from those who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption." (2 Peter 2:18-19)

Attention, mothers! Is this what you want your daughters to become? Is this what you want your sons to label you?

And just in case you think this reducing of women to sex and sexual parts is a random fluke, earlier in June of this year, the word vagina became a word of political discourse in the Michigan state congress.

“Finally, Mr. Speaker, I’m flattered that you’re all so interested in my vagina, but ‘no’ means ‘no,’” [Congresswoman Lisa Brown] said during a floor speech.

When she was denied to speak shortly afterward, she claimed she was denied because she used the word vagina. However, the Michigan House Speaker said he denied her the speaking platform because the "no means no" is a statement often used against unwanted sexual advances. More specifically, it is an anti-rape statement to assert woman's authority. The entire context of her statement is sexual. Even more troubling, Lisa Brown began the statement with "I'm flattered..." followed by a phrase used around rape situations.

The State House barred her from speaking. To protest, she joined with Eve Ensler the author of the Vagina Monologues. Then, they rallied up a bunch of other women to repeat the word vagina.

Capitol facilities director Steve Benkovsky estimated about 2,500 spectators – women and men – watched the play in downtown Lansing from lawn chairs and blankets. Billed on Facebook as the "Vaginas Take Back the Capitol!" event, the combination play and protest included political signs and chants of "Vagina! Vagina!"

Ensler, who flew in from California, where she's overseeing production of her new play, said she was thrilled to be involved and likened the punishment meted out by the Republican leadership of the state House to "the Dark Ages."

However, they forget that the context of the comment that barred Lisa Brown from speaking has a sexual context. "I’m flattered that you’re all so interested in my vagina, but ‘no’ means ‘no,’”. The word vagina has nothing to do with it. Lisa Brown could have easily said, "I’m flattered that you’re all so interested in [having sex with me], but ‘no’ means ‘no,’”

So, the incessant repetition does nothing to redefine the word vagina. Likewise, the incessant repetition of the word slut does nothing to redefine the word slut. When there is no redefinition, there is no reclamation. All this repetition will achieve is reinforcing the concept of all women as sluts and validating misogyny.

There is such an intense obsession with women's sexual organs and zero focus on women's souls. "Vaginas take back the Capitol" Hello? Are women nothing more than their sexual organs? But this focus on women as vaginas and sluts - by women themselves! - will hurt women and will damage 150 years of hard work for equality. And this is not some random fluke. This is a pattern emerging in our culture. Pop culture from Lady Gaga's chant "I wanna be your hooker" to sexting to the book "Fifty Shades of Grey" show that this indeed a problem within our culture. Only 2% of people are virgins, and promiscuous sex has become people's top priority. If all a woman can be is reduced to her body parts, then society will consider her a nameless, faceless, soulless creature.

Because all this objectification and sexualization neglecting women's souls has come after the so-called sexual revolution and feminist movement of the 1960s and 1970s (and its self-proclaimed success), the degredation of women as sex objects must be considered a result of feminism. There is another culture that has reduced women to their body parts. Here is an excerpt from the book describing just how women were reduced.

One afternoon, Mahtob was watching a children's show on television, consisting of one or two violent cartoons followed by an impassioned Islamic lecture. After the children's show a medical program ran, and it caught my attention as well as Mahtob's. It was about birth, and as the show progressed, the absurdity of this culture struck me anew. The program showed the actual birth of a baby. There was the Islamic mother, attended by male doctors, the camera full upon her naked body - but her head, face, and neck were wrapped in a chador. (Betty Mahmoody pg 312)

This is from the book Not Without My Daughter by Betty Mahmoody, an American woman who was deceived by her Iranian husband and imprisoned in Iran for eighteen months during the 1980s. There is a common misperception that the Middle East is full of anti-sex prudes. In reality, the Middle East is the most hypersexual region in the world. That is what I learned when I read Phyllis Chesler's book The Death of Feminism. Although she takes a Freudian interpretation (I strongly disagree there), I saw too many similarities in the emphasis on sex between their culture and our culture. Only in the Middle East, it takes a more dangerous and intense form. Men there crave sex so much that they cannot wait if a woman has had a C-section, so they tear open the stitches. The reason men insist on keeping her women hidden is because men cannot consider women as humans with souls; men can only think of women as sex objects to such an extent that the mere sight of a woman causes a strong sexual desire. The reason women stay hidden is because of the intense hypersexualization and the intense objectification of women. Men are so obsessed with sex that covering women is the only way they can stop thinking about it.

The only difference between these cultures is that our culture openly flaunts the sex while the Middle Easterners tend to keep it private within the bedroom. Somehow, our culture thinks of reducing women to sluts and vaginas as empowerment. There is no such illusion in the Middle East.

Genuine empowerment is in valuing the human soul above the body. When your mind has authority over your body, then you are truly empowered. Succumbing to every sexual urge or desire can never be empowerment because then you lack authority and control over your own body. Succumbing to every sexual urge means that the sex hormones control you. The lack of control of your own bodily process is incontinence.

"For when they speak great swelling words of emptiness, they allure through lusts of the flesh, through lewdness, the ones who actually escaped from those who live in error. While they promise them liberty, they themselves are slaves of corruption." (2 Peter 2:18-19)

I don't think Christians are offended or outraged enough to take action against the degeneration of our culture. I think that Christians are too afraid of succumbing to temptation that they have forgotten their dedication to Jesus and that they have chosen to isolate themselves from the evils of the world instead of confronting the world.

"Do not incline my heart to any evil thing, to practice wicked works with men who work iniquity." (Psalm 141:4)

"The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in, from this time forth, and even forevermore." (Psalm 121:7-8)

Jesus has called us to be the light of the world.

"you are the light of the world. A city that is set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a lampstand, and it gives light to all who are in the house. Let your light shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in Heaven." (Mathew 5:14-16)

Unfortunately, Christians have shunned and isolated ourselves from the world. But by isolating ourselves from the world, we have placed our lights under heavy baskets. And in this isolation, Christianity whimpers to an end.

As we are called to share the Gospel, we must follow the example of Jesus. Jesus placed Himself in the midst of sinners so that they may see righteousness and can choose whether to repent and follow righteousness.

"And when the scribes and Pharisees saw Him eating with the tax collectors and sinners, they said to His disciples, "How is it that He eats with tax collectors and sinners?

When Jesus heard it, He said to them, "Those who are well have no need of a physician, but those who are sick. I did no come to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance." (Mark 2:16-17)

And when we dedicate ourselves and when we have genuine righteousness in our hearts, then we cannot be tempted into evil, and then we can stand in the midst of evil as lights in the dark.

"The Lord shall preserve you from all evil; He shall preserve your soul. The Lord shall preserve your going out and your coming in, from this time forth, and even forevermore." (Psalm 121:7-8)

It was the start of this cultural degeneration that caused Christianity to begin hiding, but when the light was removed, the darkness of corruption spread further and wider throughout our culture. Readers, we are called to spread the truth, to purify society, and to preserve people's souls. And we cannot achieve this if we hide ourselves.

"Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father in heaven." (Mathew 5:16)

Christians and parents cannot confront the evils in the world when they hide from the world and when they keep themselves ignorant of the world. But because Christians have gone into hiding, they have abandoned our nation's children like sheep to the wolves. Some people complain about popular culture, but they do nothing to counter it. I want Christians and parents to wake up and become outraged at what our culture tells its children. If this upsets you and offends you, then teach your children why this is wrong and give your children a positive role model to counter the misogyny that pretends to empower women.

Take a look from this clip at Lady Gaga singing, "I wanna be your hooker." Hooker is a synonym for slut, and we have children learning to think of themselves and other women as sluts. The nation's children are learning to idealize themselves as objects for men's sexual gratification. Mothers and fathers, is this what you want your daughters to admire and to become? If feminism is all about women being reduced to body parts, then women are more empowered without it.
