Loving and Living Well

text size A A A

If you had to choose, would you use your last $40 on groceries this week or to take your sick child to the doctor? Would you spend it at the gas station so you could get to work or at the pharmacy so your child could get well?

The high cost of healthcare has forced many parents to make these difficult choices. Acacia Bamberg Salatti is the Director of Faith-based and Neighborhood Partnerships for the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services. She recently joined me as an Every Child podcast guest to share about provisions in the Affordable Care Act that provide medical and preventive care for many of the families and children Bethany serves—single parents, vulnerable children with significant medical needs, and teens aging out of foster care. Listen here.

The healthcare system can be difficult to navigate. That’s why Acacia is working to create partnerships with local clergy and community leaders to spread the word about free and low-cost services along with local experts that can help parents know their options and make the best choices for their families.

Scripture asks a provocative question: “Suppose a brother or a sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to them, ‘Go in peace; keep warm and well fed,’ but does nothing about their physical needs, what good is it” (James 2:15–16 NIV)? At Bethany, we believe that providing basic necessities, including healthcare for every child, is a spiritual issue of obedience. Our role is to care for children and parents and provide access to what they need to grow and thrive in response to God’s call to love our neighbors as ourselves.
