A Soldier's Prayer for a Brave Heart

My Sovereign, Almighty King,

Creator of the universe, author and perfecter of faith, righteous ruler of nations, administrator of justice, God of compassion, and shepherd of mercy; to you and you alone will I surrender. My country has called and commissioned me to set my feet on an ancient dividing line that has long separated people, tribes, clans, nations and faiths from each other. This line may also divide people from you, and from the possibility of peace with each other. But I believe that peace is possible when justice is restored, so I commit myself before you to be your ambassador of peace.

Surround our commanders and those who direct our actions, with accurate information and wise counsel. Protect them from chasing after the mirage of peace based on an absence of war, but instead, grant them the courage to procure a lasting peace that is based on the truth of fortifying this nation from tyranny.

We are sent out to face an unseen enemy well-accustomed to his own terrain and certainly aware of our limitations. Great God of justice, use our squadron today to call insurgents to accountability so that they live to terrify no more.  Go before us and lead us directly to those who wage war against the future. Plant our feet firmly and safely into the most strategic places of authority. Grant us victory as we seek those who use terror to perpetrate oppression.

In the heat of this conflict enable us to protect each other, and to defend the people to whom we were sent to liberate. Give us the ability to pierce through the darkness and penetrate the shadows of this land veiled in uncertainty, and shrouded by pain.

Give me a brave heart to face the deep sorrows in my life - those from which I have been wounded, and those still yet to come which I must conquer. Guard me from desiring retribution, Lord, when the suffering is unjust. Rather, would you be my vindication and hide me in the shadow of your almighty hand? When the sands of temptation blast across my heart, protect me with your shield of faith and cover me with your grace. Assure me, Lord God, in this hour of my commission that I go in honor, that I soldier for justice, and that I act with integrity.

Precious Father, keep me from discrediting everything for which I have expended my life, so that when my days on earth are complete and I cross the eternal divide, I will be found faithful to my convictions. Help me to "die well," regardless of the sacrifices which your destiny may require.

Amen.
