According to World Vision, 14,000 children die every day from hunger. The following statement is directly from their website at www.worldvision.org:
Millions of children worldwide desperately need help. These children live a nightmare, facing issues such as abuse, exploitation, forced labor, rape, and abandonment.
Currently there is a global food crisis occurring based on rising food prices and drought. There is an increasing worldwide problem of sexual exploitation of children and youth.
Helping feed the poor and protect the vulnerable is one of the clearest commands in New Testament. There is very much debate about tithing to the church. There is very little debate about the call to give to the poor and protect the vulnerable. One of the first organizational efforts of the early church was establishing deacons to help ensure that widows were fed (Acts 6).
I feel a huge responsibility as an American Christian to help deal with the atrocities happening in some of the poorest countries in the world. America is one of the richest countries in the world. I urge all of you to give generously to excellent organizations like World Vision. We can help solve world hunger.
Giving generously is also a great motivation for managing money well. The better you manage it, the more you can be part of the solution. Our dollars go a long way in most poor countries.
Please do not be limited because some have made you feel guilty about tithing ten percent to your local church before giving anything else. Most local churches are not fulfilling every mandate of caring for the worlds needs. I believe that God is blessing many para-church organizations because they fill a gap and they operate very efficiently. I believe many of these organizations deserve the best of our giving rather than the leftovers.
