Organic Bedding Is More than a Trend – It’s the Healthiest Option!

Whenever something begins trending, the first thing everyone does is rush out to buy that item, notwithstanding that a trend may just be the result of high-powered Madison Avenue advertising campaigns. However, when it comes to organic bedding, there is a very good reason why an increasing number of people are showing an interest in it and it all boils down to the fact that it really is the healthiest option. There are a number of reasons why.

The Absence of Dangerous Chemicals
One good example of how we are led to buy bedding treated with dangerous chemicals would be when we see something labelled as ‘fire retardant’ or ‘fire resistant.’ Did you know that the chemicals used to treat fabric to make it resistant to flames are actually quite toxic? Some of the most common chemical compounds used in fire retardant bedding, including mattresses, sheets, bedspreads, blankets and pillow coverings include:

  • Formaldehyde
  • Decabromodiphenyl oxide
  • Antimony trioxide
  • Vinylidiene chloride
  • Melamine
  • Zinc borate
  • Boric acid

Now then, everyone knows that formaldehyde is used extensively in the embalming process of dead bodies, and that’s a spooky thought at the best of times when you think about the fact that you are sleeping on a mattress treated with embalming fluid! It’s enough to give you the shivers. But beyond that, a simple compound like boric acid is much more dangerous than you think.

A Deeper Look at Boric Acid
One of the main reasons why so many people are opting for latex mattresses covered with a 100% non-treated, completely organic fabric is to avoid the many health-related risks inherent in a compound like boric acid. These include, but are not limited to:

  • Toxic to the reproductive system
  • Developmental toxin
  • Prenatal mortality
  • Shown to reduce sperm counts
  • Dangerous for a developing fetus

That should be enough to scare you off flame-retardant bedding if you are pregnant or thinking of conceiving. This all gives cause to wonder if this could be one of the strongest reasons why so many couples have trouble conceiving when there are no apparent problems with the reproductive organs.

Assorted Health Related Risks in General
One of those chemicals is bad enough but combined, there are a number of health-related risks that aren’t readily apparent unless you have been informed. For example, another chemical not listed above, DBDPO, has been found in breast milk and has been definitively linked to breast cancer. Antimony is a very close relative of arsenic, and formaldehyde should send out flashing danger signs in bright neon colors. It has been linked to a number of different types of cancer.

When the skin rubs against those chemicals throughout the night, toxicity can reach fatal levels. Studies have shown that the amount of chemicals a body can absorb can reach levels more than 27 times that which is considered safe by the United States Environmental Protection Agency, EPA. Flame retardant mattresses fall within this toxic range! By this point, you should have no doubt that there are very good reasons why organic bedding is trending. If you haven’t done so already, check your bedding and if it has been treated, replace it at your earliest convenience. Your health (and your very life!) could depend on it.
