Debt and Spirituality: Digging Your Way Out

debt free life and spirituality

Debt seems to be an American pastime. It can be a great thing, allowing for the purchase of a reliable car and a home. However, it can also be a snare that drags you down and affects every aspect of your life, including spirituality. The two are more closely linked than you might think, and it’s important to declare financial independence for full spiritual freedom.

Debt a Sign of Deep Spiritual Issues

Most people are in debt these days, but it’s not without its intrinsic negatives. According to Evangelist Billy Graham, debt can actually be a sign of deep, unspoken spiritual issues.

“Debt is often a sign of a deeper problem—and that is our desire for the things that money can buy,” Graham wrote in response to a follower’s question about credit card debt. “The Bible has a word for this: greed. That’s not a very pretty word, and we even may react against labeling ourselves as greedy. But in reality isn’t that what we really are, when we desire things we can’t afford or spend money on pleasures that won’t last? The Bible warns, ‘The greedy bring ruin to their households’ (Proverbs 15:27).” FULL POST

It has one of the lowest poverty rates from the US and the median household income is nearly double the national average. 5 Great Home Upgrades To Drive Up The Monthly Rent

When you decide to turn your home into a rental property there are lots of things you need to do. It's crucial to study the market, sort out insurance, read up on the law, and everything else until you're ready to pull the trigger.

There is only one major thing you might not have considered. In what ways can you upgrade your home to maximize the amount of rent you can charge? I'm sure you want to make lots of money, so let's look into a few of the upgrades you should be focusing on.

1 - Building Brand New Bedrooms

If you're living in a home it's pointless building new bedrooms unless you get lots of guests. It's different if you're going to rent your home because more bedrooms adds to the value of it.

It's also worth pointing out you might be renting out the rooms on an individual basis. This obviously means for every extra bedroom you have there will be one additional person paying you rent every month.

4 Major Religions and Their Views on Plastic Surgery

religion and plastic surgery

As more and more people seek to feel comfortable in their own skin, cosmetic procedures have continued to grow in popularity over the past couple of decades. Nowadays, procedures ranging from tummy tucks to breast enlargements have become fairly commonplace, with over 10 million people in the United States alone opting for such surgeries. But even in the face of mainstream acceptance, it's fair to ask if meddling with one's body is spiritually beneficial or not.

Since getting a facelift wasn't really an option back when most holy scriptures were written, cosmetic surgery is in a gray area as far as religion is concerned. Some spiritual leaders unilaterally condemn it, while others make allowances for it in certain instances. Of course, since there are big differences between spiritual practices, it can be helpful to take a closer look at some of the world's major religions and see how they view plastic surgery:

Christianity
Christian teachings discourage vanity, as pride is considered to be one of the man's greatest sins. God made man in his image, so it's believed that people should generally be accepting of their outward appearance. Nevertheless, there are also those who underline the fact that plastic surgery can change people's lives for the better. A much-quoted Bible passage states that Jesus himself once put back the ear of a soldier after it had been cut, thereby legitimizing man's quest to repair his body. FULL POST

Organic Bedding Is More than a Trend – It’s the Healthiest Option!

coffee bed morning

Whenever something begins trending, the first thing everyone does is rush out to buy that item, notwithstanding that a trend may just be the result of high-powered Madison Avenue advertising campaigns. However, when it comes to organic bedding, there is a very good reason why an increasing number of people are showing an interest in it and it all boils down to the fact that it really is the healthiest option. There are a number of reasons why.

The Absence of Dangerous Chemicals
One good example of how we are led to buy bedding treated with dangerous chemicals would be when we see something labelled as ‘fire retardant’ or ‘fire resistant.’ Did you know that the chemicals used to treat fabric to make it resistant to flames are actually quite toxic? Some of the most common chemical compounds used in fire retardant bedding, including mattresses, sheets, bedspreads, blankets and pillow coverings include: FULL POST

Why Your Church Should Have a Christian Bookstore

There is a growing concern that society has been steadily moving away from faith of any kind and as a result, fewer and fewer of the mainstream bookstores are selling religious books or articles of any kind. You may find a very small section consisting of a few shelves in a store the size of a large city block. This is just one reason why it would benefit your assembly to have a Christian bookstore on site at your church, but there are other reasons as well. Consider a few of the following and you just might be motivated to start a bookstore for your church.

Wholesome Literature – Fiction and Nonfiction
Way back in the day the ‘in-crowd’ coined a phrase that is still strong today, “Sex, drugs and rock-n-roll,” and many youth pastors and parents cringe each and every time they hear it. It says nothing for the morals we, as a society, are raising our children to uphold and as a result, that mindset has permeated the very literature that was once uplifting and Godly. If you want to offer your congregation an alternative to the filth that has permeated bookstores and theaters around the world, you can offer them wholesome literature that has been reviewed by your church council and/or elders. How to Deal With Tough Financial Times

Most of us have had to deal with strained finances at one point or another. It’s stressful, and if you have a family, it can be even harder on you. When your resources are thin, you’re struggling just to get by, and there aren’t any straightforward options in sight, it’s easy for your faith to be shaken.

However, with the right mindset and a commitment to your faith, you can pull yourself out of any financial slump.

Coping Strategies
God doesn’t care about how much money you make. Remember that wealth is not an indication of God’s favor, nor is poverty a punishment for your sins. Instead, your tough financial times may only be a trial, and a temporary one at that.

Here’s what you can do in the meantime:

Recognize the good things in your life. First, though it may prove difficult, try to forget about your financial woes for a moment and think about all the good things in your life. Do you still have your health? Do you have a close circle of friends and family members, whom you enjoy? Are you still able to read your favorite books at the library and wander around your local parks? You are alive and breathing, and have countless blessings to enjoy—even if you’re going through a financial struggle. Taking the time to recognize those blessings will immediately relieve your stress and remind you that there are more important things in life than money. FULL POST

How to Comfort a Friend or Community Member With Anxiety

comforting a friend

Everyone experiences anxiety to some degree, but for some people, anxiety is strong enough, recurring enough, and present enough to seriously interfere with the quality of their lives. According to the ADAA, anxiety disorders affect approximately 18 percent of United States adults, and are cumulatively the most common mental health illness in the country.

To make matters worse, there is no cure for anxiety; instead, its effects can only be mitigated through treatment and the support of friends, family, and community members. Still, only about one-third of anxiety sufferers are currently undergoing formal treatment, so we owe it to our community members to step up and be available for support in any way we can.
