The two night natural sources- equal or different?

We all know the two great lights that there in the sky, the sun and the moon, the first comes in the day; the second comes in the night. In their size they are different, but the bible in the beginning describes them equals and then different as written in Genesis 1: 16-

"And God made the two great lights: the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night; and the stars"

In the beginning of this verse it's been said that the sun and the moon are big or great
And both of them seem to be equal in their sizes. But a few words after we reveal that one of them is greater than the other, the sun are greater than the moon.

This slight contradiction need to be explained. Firstly, we can find the word big in Hebrew that described the size, that means that both of them are big and great, but it doesn't mean that they are equal like the verse continues; secondly, we can say that in astronomy we know that the angels of the moon and the son are equals (the commentary of Ralbg), but there size is different; thirdly, there is a Talmudic story that in the beginning they were equal, but then the moon wanted to be greater than
The sun, so God put him smaller....
