The Shining Face

text size A A A

In the passing month E-teacher decided that this is the time to shine the faces of some children who live in the Promised Land. We decided to support Meir Panim's After School Youth Club by donating a portion of the tuition of every student that will sign up for one of the courses that the company offers. The meaning of Meir Panim in Hebrew is to be nice to someone else and today we will see where this expression is found in the Bible.

The expression to shine the faces appears a few times in the Old Testament. Without any doubt the most famous one is found in the Priestley blessing in Numbers 6: 24-26, as written:

" יְבָרֶכְךָ יְהוָה, וְיִשְׁמְרֶךָ. יָאֵר יְהוָה פָּנָיו אֵלֶיךָ, וִיחֻנֶּךָּ.

יִשָּׂא יְהוָה פָּנָיו אֵלֶיךָ, וְיָשֵׂם לְךָ שָׁלוֹם."

"The Lord bless you, and keep you;The Lord make His face shine on you, And be gracious to you;The Lord lift up His countenance on you, And give you peace."

In the most important blessing in the synagogue-a blessing that was a remnant of the time when there was a temple and the people were blessed by the priests-this expression appears as a wish that our G-d will let his face shine , as we should do as well, as Job said in Job 29:24.

This expression is found also in Psalms 4:7 and Psalms 31:17 and Psalm 44:4 where the people ask G-d to shine his face upon them.(see also Psalms 80:4, 8, 20; 89,16; 119,135) However, the most beautiful verse with this expression in Psalms is found in Psalms 67:2-

" אֱלֹהִים, יְחָנֵּנוּ וִיבָרְכֵנוּ; יָאֵר פָּנָיו אִתָּנוּ סֶלָה."

" God be gracious to us and bless us, And cause His face to shine upon us"

G-d also shines up the face of the wise person in Ecclesiastes 8:1 and the temple in Daniel 9:17. If G-d can do it, we as the people who got from the image of G-d should do it as well. You also learn a new language, the language of the languages, the sacred one, and you also give to others who will be able to learn as well.

As you shine your face- you shine also the others!
