It’s one thing to be thrown into a lions’ den … it’s another thing to walk freely into a den, knowing there be lions there. That’s what’s admirable about Ryan Anderson’s appearance, March 26, on CNN’s Piers Morgan Live program.
Anderson researches and writes about marriage and religious liberty for The Heritage Foundation, and is author of What Is Marriage? Man And Woman: A Defense. He had to know, when he accepted an invitation to appear on the Morgan program, that he would be appearing in a decidedly hostile environment. Just how hostile quickly became apparent…
The majesty and history of the U.S. Supreme Court can certainly be intimidating, especially if you’re called upon to argue before the justices a position running hard against the current media wave. But while Chuck Cooper (who defended marriage before the High Court that same morning on behalf of Alliance Defending Freedom and the ProtectMarriage.com legalteam) enjoyed the benefits of legal decorum and generous measures of civility, Mr. Anderson was granted neither. Indeed, he was lucky to finish a sentence now and then.
Nevertheless, I commend him as an example of courage, a word succinctly defined by Ernest Hemingway as “grace under pressure.” Christians are not only encouraged, but commanded, to live in preparation for those pressures, however, wherever, whenever, they may be manifest in our lives. As St. Peter wrote:
“Sanctify the Lord God in your hearts, and always be ready to give a defense to everyone who asks you a reason for the hope that is in you …” (1 Peter 3:15).
Our society, our culture – even some of our family and friends – are increasingly closed to the biblical position on marriage and sexual purity. But their opposition presents an opportunity for us to stand, and speak openly, thoughtfully, gracefully, His truth in love.
