Fix or Forgive (365 Days of Daring Faith – DAY 15)

text size A A A

Romans 12:17 (NLT)
Never pay back evil with more evil. Do things in such a way that everyone can see you are honorable.

A mother apologizes for abandoning her son. After so many years, she asks for a second chance.

The son thinks to himself that it’s not really that easy. Am I supposed to just give in and forgive her? Surely, justice should be served in some way. She should feel the pain of abandonment — the same pain I felt, right?

All these feelings are valid and could be acted upon in an attitude of anger and resentment. But this is not God’s way. God cares more about justice than we ever will. He is a just God and He knows best how to give people who have hurt us exactly what they deserve.

But just think, how rarely He does this? He didn’t give us what we deserve. We deserve death and hell for our sins, but God didn’t give us that. Instead, He opened up His arms wide in the person of Jesus Christ and gave us grace and salvation.

We seek to pay back evil with more evil, but not God. We fear the perpetrator will go unpunished, but God keeps the scores in Heaven. He sees. He knows. We have no need to worry about anything. God promises He will repay — not might repay, not hope to repay, not maybe repay — He will repay.

It’s not our job to fix our enemies. That’s God’s job. He knows just what to do. It’s our job to forgive our enemies, forgive those who have hurt us, and be discerning and give some people a second chance. God’s got the justice so we can experience the joy.

“The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends towards justice.”
— Martin Luther King Jr.
