10 Tips for Planning a Smooth Baptism

Baptism is one of the most important days in a child’s life, and it should be celebrated. Your friends and family will want to be a part of your celebration, so consider having a party.

This requires careful planning and all the right resources. As you go about your preparations, here are some tips for hosting the perfect baptism reception.

1. Create Beautiful Invitations

The very first impression will be your invitations, so plan these carefully. Invitations should be appropriate to the event, so cute photos and designs are a must. You can easily design your custom invitations online and have them shipped to your door.

2. Choose the Right Date, Time, and Venue

The smallest details will make or break the success of your event. If you choose a date and time that doesn’t work for the majority of your guests, you’ll have an empty house. Consider holidays, family reunions, and other events that would make it difficult for guests to attend.

The venue is another important piece. It should be spacious enough for everyone on your guest list, comfortable for your baby, and appropriate for the occasion. Church reception halls, large family houses, large backyards, dance halls, and other cozy venues tend to fit the bill.

3. Consider a Theme

Parties should be planned with a theme in mind. Not only does this add an element of fun to your baby’s baptism, but it also makes it easier to decide on party favors, decorations, invitations, and more.

4. Develop a Party-Planning Team

While it’s tempting to handle the entire planning and execution of the party by yourself, it will be more successful if you ask for help. Choose a few trusted individuals who are responsible and have a knack for planning.

While some details will have to be handled by you (such as setting the date with the church and making payments), many things can be covered by others. Have friends create and order your invitations, pick up decorations, and meet with the caterers.

5. Have Something for the Kids

Chances are, there will be other kids at this baptism, and you don’t want them to be bored. Bored children usually result in chaos, whether it’s crying, exploring, or destruction.

If you have activities for the kids, you’ll avoid many of these issues. You might set up an outside area for corn-hole toss or other games. You could also designate a corner of your venue to indoor games, puzzles, and books.

6. Order Food Well in Advance

It’s never too early to order the food. If you wait too long, you’ll have a hard time finding a caterer to take your order. If you plan in advance, you can take your time with tastings and shop around for the best value for the money.

Additionally, order your cake ahead of time. A good baker needs time to plan and execute a beautiful cake, and since this is one of the most important parts of your party preparations, you don’t want to mess this up.

7. Include Family Traditions

Make room for family traditions in your preparations. For example, your family might have a special spiritual ritual to perform at the ceremony. Or, many parents have a baby baptism book. Each guest can write a piece of advice for your baby and sign their name. Factor this in so that you have the space, time, and hands to accomplish it.

8. Stipulate a Gift Policy

Gifts are an unspoken standard at baptisms, but if you don’t want your guests to bring gifts, tell them in advance. You might insert a card with your invitations that says, “No gifts, please.”

If you want a specific kind of gift, such as cash, stipulate that in advance as well. It might seem tacky to ask for cash, but you can do it well. Say something like, “We’re planning for our baby’s college fund and will accept gifts in the form of money.”

9. Hire a Photographer

You’ll want a collection of good photos to commemorate the event, and since you and your family will be busy celebrating, you can hardly count on your own photography skills. It’s convenient to have someone else taking photographs so that you can enjoy the moment.

10. Give Out Party Favors

Guests will probably arrive with a gift, so offer a “thank you” gift in the form of party favors.

Appropriate party favors range from bags of candy to cutesy crafts with your baby’s name. These can easily be made or ordered, and it finishes your party on a positive note.
