Scripture: They did this; the president tasted the water, and it had turned into wine. Having no idea where it came from—though the servants who had drawn the water knew—the president of the feast called the bridegroom and said, "Everyone serves good wine first and the worse wine when the guests are well wined; but you have kept the best wine till now." John 2:9-10
Prayer: Help me to recognize the specially selected wine that is flowing into my life.
Response: Whether you have been well wined and your taste is dulled, or you are weary from the length of this banquet or life journey, or you have experienced deep loss to the extent that you have forgotten where you are, on this occasion experience the special vintage that has been selected for you by the wine steward to accompany the special offerings served you.
Is it the stranger who comes into your midst with electrifying tales or a gentle witness, a family member or loved one who shares an insight that startles you though his or her head doesn't reach the table top, an embrace enfolds you without warning and love expressed without words? Now that is vintage wine, and you who considered yourself a connoisseur of wine and had lost hope in what the banquet had to offer.
So today, stir yourself into wakefulness; put aside any thought that you have tasted it all and wish that you could return to a past of satisfying vintages—that there are no surprises awaiting— and then, just then, be surprised at what the wine steward is pouring into that the Waterford crystal before you.
