Under the fig tree

Scripture: Jesus replied, "You (Nathanel) believe that just because I said: I saw you under the fig tree. You are going to see greater things than that." And then he added, "In all truth I tell you, you will see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man." John 1:50-51

Prayer: Under how many fig trees have I sat and wondered—like now in this empty house before dawn—just as Nathanel. Help me to appreciate ever more deeply that I am known even in the darkness.

Response: There was a popular song when you were in high school that had a line in it, you'll never be alone. Well, that is something to invest your life, your quiet moments, times when you can hardly catch a breath with all the tasks you seek to accomplish, in the midst of confusion—the full experience of life even for those who do not leave the confines of their home or room—for that matter. You are known.

That means, there is no need to build a clock in trying to describe the circumstances that challenge you—just tell the time. And the time is perhaps your uncertainty, lack of confidence or commitment, weariness—but of course exhilaration also. It's like having someone come into the room, or you sitting beside a stranger and learning instantly that there is no need of introductions.

Think back on the last time you sat under a fig tree—even if it was under a palm tree, huddled from an icy blast on a hillside, or in a Starbucks with a latte. What was stirring in your heart? Would reflection change your inner dialogue now if you knew then that you were known intimately and your fervent prayer was and is already acted upon by a loving God? And perhaps your vision will improve, be rewarded to see heaven open and the angels of God ascending and descending over the Son of man. After all, that is precisely what was promised to Nathanel.
