The Spirit of Truth

In the Gospel of John Chapter 14 the Lord Jesus tells His disciples He will pray to the Father, and The Father will send them the Holy Spirit. The King James Version in this chapter calls Him the Comforter, the New King James calls Him the Helper, and the New International version calls Him the Advocate. The Holy Spirit comforts us, helps us and He advocates for us in our prayers to the Father “with groanings which cannot be uttered” Romans 8:26. In verse 26 of John chapter 14 Jesus says, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My Name, He will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all things that I said to you.” The Holy Spirit is also our Teacher and He is holy.

In verse 17 Jesus refers to the Holy Spirit as “The Spirit of Truth”. In John 15:26 the Lord Jesus again calls him “the Spirit of Truth who proceeds from the Father, He will testify of me.” Many times when I hear teachings on the Holy Spirit, the teachings always seem to center around the Spirit’s power to enable us to live the Christian life, which is absolutely true. I hear very little, however, on the Holy Spirit as our Teacher. The Holy Spirit as the Spirit of Truth will not camouflage the truth. He will expose us to the truth. (1Corinthians 2:13) The Spirit of Truth will declare the truth of the Lord Jesus.

The Spirit of Truth “will convict the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment” John 16:8. The Holy Spirit lives within those of us who have trusted in the Lord Jesus Christ for our salvation. He teaches us about the truth of ourselves and of the truth of God. Anyone who is not speaking the truth of God’s word is not speaking in accordance with the Spirit of God.

The Spirit of Truth who is holy will only speak truth concerning the Lord Jesus Christ and the Word of God. If you hear anyone speaking untruths about God and His word from the pulpit, on radio, television, social media, or anywhere for that matter, that person is not speaking with the Holy Spirit. Do not accept what is being said even if he or she is a pastor, or one of your favorite Bible Teachers.

How will we know when the truth is taught? We have to test what is taught with the Word of God – comparing one scripture verse with another scripture verse. A Bible concordance (hard copy or online) can be very helpful in this endeavor. We have to read God’s word, and the Holy Spirit – The Teacher – will enlighten our understanding to the truth.

Let us not rely solely on our pastors and our teachers to enlighten us on what God is saying to us. Read your Bible daily. Meditate on what you have read. Confirm and reconfirm if you will what is being taught with the Word of God. The Spirit of Truth “will guide you into all truth”. John 16:13.

The Holy Spirit is our great resource. If anyone teaches something and your spirit questions it, ask another person who you know speaks the truth of God. Pray also and the Holy Spirit – The Spirit of Truth will enlighten your understanding to the truth.
