Interview with The Sonflowerz [Gourmet Music Report #20]

Many AC/Inspo stations have taken notice of the music of Becca and Elissa Leander, known as The Sonflowerz. This sister duo has 3 albums under their belt and have played their music worldwide. It was nice to meet them for the first time recently.

DT: Through your teenage years, what inspired you to dig deep into music?
Elissa:
What really fueled my love for music was just being able to go into my room & have a special time of worship with God. The guitar really was just a tool to enter into worship & write new songs to Him. That's where I learned to sing, to write, & to play all at the same time. And really, Becca can tell you, I was the shyest person you'll ever meet back then and the last thing I wanted to do was get on a stage & play these songs I was writing. It really was a walk by faith type of thing to say, "Okay God, I trust you. I'll be faithful with these songs you've given me & just share them with whoever you put in front of me."

DT: What's the overall theme of your most recent CD "All Over The World"?
Elissa:
It talks about the world as a whole and how the body of Christ is actually really connected. We've been able to travel over to the UK about four times and really see the believers over across the sea just living for Christ and worshiping Him. We have a passion in our hearts to reach this generation who is just really searching for something true to latch onto.
Becca: I remember going to the British public schools for the first time. It was just crazy because there were kids there who had never met a Christian before -- kids that didn't know who Jesus was. They had so many questions for us. And that really just kicked off and deepened our vision for why we do what we do -- that music is a tool that you can use to really further the kingdom of God & reach people who had never heard about Him before.

DT: What kind of things do you like to do outside of music?
Becca:
Well actually Elissa and I love to weld - we're welders [laughing]. It's funny, last night we said, "If anyone asks us what we like to do other than music, we're going to say welding." But it's not true. We're way more boring.
Elissa: We live in the Rocky Mountains & being outside is something that we love to do. Hiking and spending time with friends is a big thing for us. And [we love] getting back to our home church.

Make sure to tune in to "Under The Radar" episode #37 (starting this Friday) for special interviews with The Sonflowerz and Kathleen Carnalli.
