1. Choose the Right Mattress

The right mattress can make a major difference. Considering that the average person spends close to one-third of their time on their mattress each week, it stands to reason that you’d want to invest in one that provides the right support for your body.

There are plenty of different mattress solutions – and you should do your research and try various options to see what works in conjunction with your body and preexisting pain – but most agree that memory foam is the best option. “By conforming to your body at your pressure points, memory foam alleviates stress and pain you collect during the day,” Amerisleep points out. If your back is bothering you all day long, more support at the appropriate points on your body may do wonders.

2. Try a Healthy Workout Routine

When pain is in the picture, the last thing most people want to think about is exercise. However, safe and gentle exercise routines can reduce and prevent back pain over the long haul.

When you exercise, endorphins – known as the body’s pain-killing hormones – are released into the body and actually block pain signals from registering in your brain. Endorphins also help reduce stress, anxiety, and depression – side effects of back pain. In other words, it’s better than any pain medication a doctor can prescribe. Speak with a doctor about which exercises are safe for your condition, but things like aerobics, yoga, and swimming are usually good options.

3. Improve Posture at Work

“Surprisingly, the act of sitting requires an incredible amount of muscular effort to keep your body erect,” says Slyvia Marten of Spine-Health.com. “And given the amount of time most people spend sitting, good sitting posture is vitally important.”

Try to remain conscious of how you’re sitting at your desk during the day. One of the most common mistakes is what Marten calls the “office chair hunch.” This is the posture many people adopt when sitting at the front of the chair and hunching towards the screen. The ideal posture actually involves resting your entire back against the chair support.

4. Eat a Healthier Diet

One of the major causes of back pain is inflammation in the tissue. And, as you may know, inflammation is often directly caused by what you eat. “Left unchecked,” says Dr. John Spallino of the Laser Spine Institute, “inflammation will run rampant through your body, causing all kinds of problems, including low-back pain.” And even if inflammation isn’t the only thing causing pain, it certainly makes things worse.

Spallino and other doctors suggest eating plenty of veggies, brightly colored fruits, olive oil, and green tea. There are also plenty of herbs and spices with known anti-inflammatory properties, such as basil, ginger, cinnamon, garlic, rosemary, onions, oregano, and turmeric. As far as foods you’ll want to avoid, stay away from processed foods, sugary drinks, and saturated fats.

Back Pain Doesn’t Have to Define You

Chronic back pain is one of those things that affects your every waking hour. It doesn’t matter if you’re sitting, standing, or lying down, it can seem downright impossible to overcome the discomfort. Sadly, thousands of mothers let this negatively impact their relationships.
