Is Technology the Root of All Evil?

Mon, Sep. 11, 2017 Posted: 01:03 AM

We’ve all heard the saying that money is the root of all evil. Well, there may be a contender for that title now. Technology has come a long way over recent years, and some would say that it has practically taken over our lives. How often do you see people wandering around with smartphones practically glued to their hands? How often do people now visit or call one another rather than communicating online via social media? There is no doubt that modern technology has had a huge impact on the way in which we live our lives. But, is it all bad?

The darker side of modern technology

It cannot be argued that there is definitely a dark side to modern technology, although not everyone sees this. The days of children playing outdoors and getting fresh air seems to have disappeared. These days, kids are more interested in playing games, streaming movies, or going on social media sites on their computers or mobile devices.

Another major issue is communication amongst adults. We often go out these days only to see families, friends, and coupled sitting having a meal together at a restaurant. However, rather than talking and engaging with one another they are all glued to their phones.

Of course, one of the major issues that come with modern technology is increased crime in the form of cybercriminal activity. Hackers and cybercriminals have caused chaos in some cases, affecting people’s lives, affecting businesses, and committing criminal activities such as fraud and identity theft.

The effects of modern technology on crime and communication have been profound. However, it is not possible to say that technology is all bad as there is also a good side that needs to be considered.

The benefits of modern technology

So, what are the benefits of modern technology in today’s society? Well, first off it has opened up many new opportunities in terms of careers and education. People can now find work more easily, train and study more easily, and gain qualifications to further their careers. There is also the safety aspect of modern technology to consider. Going out and about these days is not always safe and having a mobile phone to hand can be hugely helpful if you find yourself in an emergency situation.

Technology such as the internet has also made it easier for us to learn about and embrace new cultures. We can now listen to music from other countries, watch movies and shows that are international, and spend time finding out more about how people around the world celebrate their culture. In addition to cultural diversity, technology has helped to make life easier in many other ways. Everything from easy access to vital services through to medical consultations via video has been used to improve quality of life for people.

In conclusion, modern technology cannot be classed as the root of all evil. Although it does have its disadvantages, it also does offer many benefits and opportunities.
