How to Overcome Adversity on your Business Journey and Give Something Back to the World

text size A A A

What doesn’t kill us makes us stronger, or so the old proverb says. The journey to business success is rarely easy. Most entrepreneurs experience all kinds of difficulties as they toil away. Even global success stories such as Gurbaksh Chahal, who dropped out of High School at 16 to pursue his dream of becoming an entrepreneur, have not always had it easy.

There are often big road humps on the path to success. Even starting a business is tough when you have no previous experience or your idea is revolutionary. Gurbaksh Chahal was the first person to recognize the importance of performance-based online advertising. Within 18-months of starting his first business, he had sold it for $40 million.

Clearly, most people are not lucky enough to make millions of dollars on their first business venture, but if you have a great idea and the capacity to work through the problems you are almost certainly going to encounter, there is no reason why you shouldn’t be as successful as Chahal.

Cash Flow

The biggest challenge that most entrepreneurs face is a lack of cash flow. Cash flow is the lifeblood of every business and if you don’t have enough money coming in, you can’t pay the bills. Bill Gates’ first business venture failed because of cash flow and technical issues. But, instead of throwing in the towel, he learned from his mistakes and went on to found Microsoft.

Bill Gates, like many other successful entrepreneurs, had the right attitude.

The Right Attitude

As it says in the Bible, in 2 Corinthians 4:8-9: “8 We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed; perplexed, but not in despair; 9 persecuted, but not abandoned; struck down, but not destroyed.”

As long as you remain positive, even when it feels like the whole world is working against you, you can still be a success. Look at where you went wrong. If cash flow was an issue, what caused it? Was it a lack of investment in your plan or did technical issues derail the business and make it impossible to meet customer demand? Until you understand what went wrong, you won’t be able to solve the same problems going forward.

The Importance of Networking

Successful entrepreneurs place a great deal of importance on networking. The modern world makes networking very easy. You can make new business connections online via social media and business forums, but don’t neglect to meet people face-to-face.

Life-Work Balance

Don’t focus on work 100% of the time. Take some time out to spend with family and community projects. Rest and relaxation will help you to recharge your batteries, which is very important.

Take advantage of local business networking functions. Here, you will meet people who are just like you and who have the same values. Seek guidance from those who are more experienced than you. Then, once you have achieved success, you can give something back to new entrepreneurs who are looking for guidance.

The important thing is to learn from your mistakes and apply this knowledge towards enriching the world and helping others. Gurbaksh Chahal now runs a non-profit foundation called The Chahal Foundation. Its aim is to create awareness of important social causes such as child sex trafficking, improve education in poor countries, and set up university scholarships for talented students.

Like many other successful entrepreneurs, Chahal is keen to give something back. If you have overcome adversity on your journey, take a leaf from Chahal’s book and apply your skills to the greater good. Good deeds make the world a better place.
