In today's press conference President Obama said, " ... and this is a long-term project — we need to spend some time in thinking about how do we bolster and reinforce our African American boys."

Mentoring of fatherless boys could have a profound impact on the black community. There are organizations already doing this work that could use more volunteers.

A definition of mentoring:

"Mentoring is a developmental partnership through which one person shares knowledge, skills, information, and perspective to foster the personal and professional growth of someone else." - ASHA

When Christian leaders talk about mentoring it is often in the context of training ministers. Example from the Bible include Jesus teaching his disciples and the Apostle Paul training Timothy.

What young black males need to see are good adult role models. 1 Corinthians 11:1 describes this kind of role model: "Follow my example, as I follow the example of Christ."
