Chuck Smith, pastor of megachurch Calvary Chapel Costa Mesa, has died at 86 years of age. Janette Smith Manderson reported her dad's death on Facebook this morning:

Update for October 3rd: My beautiful, beloved, darling Daddy is in Heaven. He has heard the words, "Well done, thou good and faithful servant: thou hast been faithful over a few things, I will make thee ruler over many things: enter thou into the joy of thy Lord." Matthew 25:21 Thank you for your faithful prayers all these months.

In the 1960s Smith and his church embraced the hippies and shared the Gospel with them. The hippy converts helped form the Jesus Movement. Smith's church also embraced contemporary Christian music.

Chuck Smith and Love Song on Kathryn Kuhlman's TV program in the early 1970s.

Smith was the target of a wild conspiracy theory in the 1970s. Conspiracy theorist John Todd claimed that witches involved in the Illuminati had a plan to take over the world. Cornerstone Magazine reporters Mike Hertenstein and Jon Trott reported in the book Selling Satan, "A Who's Who of Christian leaders were identified by Todd as dupes of the Illuminati, including Calvary Chapel's Chuck Smith." Satire Website Misrepresents Ted Cruz's Christian Faith

Photo: Official Portrait
Senator Ted Cruz

In June an untrue article about Pat Robertson was promoted across social media resulting in people believing that Robertson supported husbands spanking their wives.

Now another satire article is spreading on Facebook. The Freewood Post has published an article which reports that Texas Republican Senator Ted Cruz said, "I don’t know about you, but I believe in the Jesus who died to save himself, not enable lazy followers to be dependent on him."

Cruz did not say that. Meanwhile this satire article has received more than 21,000 times on Facebook.

The Free Wood Post website promotes itself with the slogan "news that's almost reliable." The website's disclaimer states, "Free Wood Post is a news and political satire web publication, which may or may not use real names, often in semi-real or mostly fictitious ways. All news articles contained within are fiction, and presumably fake news."

A previous article on the website featured the headline "Jesus Christ Files Lawsuit Against GOP For Slander."

Gay Rights Activist Receives 25 Year Sentence

Outside the offices of the Family Research Council where a security guard was attacked.

Floyd Lee Corkins II received a 25 year prison sentence for shooting Family Research Council security guard Leo Johnson last year. Corkins was apprehended with more than 90 rounds of ammunition. Corkins intended to kill numerous opponents of gay marriage but his plan was thwarted when the injured Johnson fought back and seized his gun.

The Associated Press has reported, "After the hearing, Johnson said he would have preferred to see Corkins get more prison time but was 'very pleased' and 'satisfied' with the judge's sentence."

Corkins targed Family Research Council because the pro-family organization opposed gay marriage and was listed on the Southern Povery Law Center website as a hate group. Although the Family Research Council has protested this label, the SPLC has refused to drop the hate group label.

Armless Athlete Competes in Body Building

Barbie Thomas is a walking miracle and a fierce athlete in body building competition. Both of her arms were amputated after she touched an electric transformer when she was 2 years old.

Thomas told Good Morning America, "I thank God I am alive." After her injury Thomas' mother made a promise to God and kept it. She worked hard to insure that her daughter would "become 'somebody.'"

Thomas attributes her survival to God:

"The doctors were boggled by my recovery," she said. "They decided I must have survived because of the rubber soles on my tennis shoes. True, they may have played their part, but I believe I survived because God saw the bigger picture and had plans for me."

In this video Thomas describes how she is thankful for the abilities that she has.

Count Your Blessings

Besides Thomas, there are other Christian athletes that have competed inspite of their physical limitations. Bethany Hamilton's story of becoming a professional surfer after enduring a shark attack was retold in the movie Soul Surfer. Jason Lester has competed in Ironman competitions after his arm was paralyzed in a car accident.

Bonobo Ape DNA Compared to Humans

Photo: Flickr/Kev Chapman - Creative Commons

The Drudge Report is carrying this headline: "PHOTOS: Primates share 98.7% of human DNA -- right down to hair loss..."

Drudge links to a London Daily Mail article which features an impressive collection of photos of bonobos.

The bonobo is one of six ape species. The others are the Bornean orangutan, chimpanzee, eastern gorilla, Sumatran orangutan and western lowland gorilla.

There is a disagreement over the interpretation of the data used to make this claim of 98.7% shared DNA.

The Institute for Creation Research reports that "the popular press did not highlight the most significant results of the bonobo genome research. The gene sequences that were similar between humans and apes showed significant levels of a phenomenon called incomplete lineage sorting (ILS). This means that the gene sequences did not consistently match up with the predicted evolutionary tree." FULL POST

Is Labor Day A Christian Holiday?

(Photo: Flickr/Bob Jagendorf)

Labor was unintended result of sin entering the world:

"Then to Adam He said, “Because you have heeded the voice of your wife, and have eaten from the tree of which I commanded you, saying, ‘You shall not eat of it,’ cursed is the ground for your sake; In toil you shall eat of it all the days of your life." - Genesis 3:17

Since Adam, several biblical figures have weighed in on labor and its virtues:

Solomon: "In all toil there is profit, but mere talk tends only to poverty." - Proverbs 14:23

Isaiah: "But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my right is with the Lord, and my recompense with my God.” - Isaiah 49:4

The Apostle Paul: "Whatever you do, work heartily, as for the Lord and not for men" - Colossians 3:23

Peter: "But I said, “I have labored in vain; I have spent my strength for nothing and vanity; yet surely my right is with the Lord, and my recompense with my God.” - 1 Peter 4:10, 11 FULL POST

Journalists Take Note of Syrian Bible Prophesy

Modern day Damascus

Syria plays a tragic role in biblical prophecy and news sites have taken notice.

Three days ago Before It's News reported, "Whatever happens to Syria could produce the temporary peace in the region that will exist a little later according to Ezekiel chapters 38 and 39, when the War of Gog and Magog will begin."

Isaiah 17 foretells destruction of the Syrian city Damascus. Christians are divided over what this passage means.

A prophecy against Damascus: "See, Damascus will no longer be a city but will become a heap of ruins. The cities of Aroer will be deserted and left to flocks, which will lie down, with no one to make them afraid. The fortified city will disappear from Ephraim, and royal power from Damascus; the remnant of Aram will be like the glory of the Israelites," declares the LORD Almighty. - Isaiah 17:1-3 NIV FULL POST

1,500 People Attacked With Acid Each Year

Photo: Department for International Development - CC
The Acid Survivors Foundation hospital treats this patient in Dhaka, Bangladesh.

Last week British teenagers Katie Gee and Kirstie Trup were assaulted by two men that splashed them with battery acid. The acid burned their clothes and part of the skin.

According to The Daily Beast, "The two were winding up a three-week stint as volunteers at a local church serving the island’s small Christian minority."

The Acid Survivors Trust International claims that 1,500 cases of acid throwing occur each year. 1,000 acid attacks occur annually in India.

The BBC reported, "The prevalence of attacks in South Asia can be explained by the easy availability of acid ... Acid is widely used in the cotton, rubber and jewellery industries. Hence attacks are also seen in rubber-producing areas like Cambodia."

The Acid Survivors Foundation helps acid victims in Bangladesh. The ASF describes the longterm physical and emotional harm caused by acid throwing:

When acid attacks the eyes, it damages them permanently. Many acid attack survivors have lost the use of one or both eyes. But the scars left by acid are not just skin deep. Many survivors suffer from psychological breakdown including identity crisis because of their lost and distorted appearance. FULL POST
