Today is the silly International Talk Like a Pirate Day. Some people will dress up in pirate costumes and talk like the pirates in Hollywood films. But piracy is not always funny.
There are two kinds of pirates. Some take over ships. Others ignore copyright laws.
Piracy on the open seas has declined recently. In August the BBC reported, "The UN estimates that about 40 people are still being held by Somali pirates." In 2011 the Somali pirates held the crews of more than 30 ships hostage.
IndyChristianReview tweeted about piracy of Christian movies on YouTube:
I should do a special PSA explaining why it's wrong to pirate Christian movies. Can't believe how many are on YouTube. :( FULL POST

Thirteen years ago a robber broke into my apartment stealing my notebook computer. The thief had access to private emails and photos. I felt victimized. That must be how the actresses, athletes, models and singers felt who were targeted by hackers that obtained private photos and leaked them online.
Actress Mary Elizabeth Winstead tweeted, "Knowing those photos were deleted long ago, I can only imagine the creepy effort that went into this. Feeling for everyone who got hacked."
Unfortunately there is a growing underground network of hackers and photo collectors. Blogger Nik Cubrilovic reports, " There are entire communities and trading networks where the data that is stolen remains private and is rarely shared with the public. The networks are broken down horizontally with specific people carrying out specific roles, loosely organized across a large number of sites (both clearnet and darknet) with most organization and communication taking place in private (email, IM)." In one of the most challenging Bible verses about prayer Christians are told to "pray without ceasing." - 1 Thessalonians 5:17 ESV
The only way we can "pray without ceasing" is by turning prayer into a lifestyle. This blog recommends using prayer lists and prayer calendars.
Operation World is both a resource book and website for praying for each nation of the world. Each day of the year prayer topics are listed for specific countries. Some highly populated countries receive multiple days of attention. During the month of September the Operation World guide will focus on 555 million people in 25 countries.
Open Doors, a ministry to persecuted believers, also produces a monthly prayer calendar. During the first week of September we are encouraged to pray for the Palestinian Territories. "Pray for long-lasting relationships to be built through the reconciliation ministry, Musalaha, which brings together
Palestinian and Messianic believers." FULL POST

Yesterday police fatally shot another man in Missouri. TV station KTVI in St Louis reported, "When police arrived, they say the man charged the officers with the knife more than once. The second time they opened fire. Witnesses report him saying, 'Kill me.'"
USA Today examined FBI statistics and reported that during a seven year period ending in 2012, there was an average of 400 people killed annually by police of which 96 involved white police officers shooting black individuals.
"How dangerous is it to be a cop?"
The Freeman, a libertarian publication, answers this question: "In 2013, out of 900,000 sworn officers, just 100 died from a job-related injury. That's about 11.1 per 100,000, or a rate of 0.001%." Out of 100 police fatalities, only 31 were killed by gunfire. "Other causes of death were: aircraft accident (1), automobile accident (28), motorcycle accident (4), falling (6), drowning (2), electrocution (1), and job-related illness (13)." FULL POST

Have you prayed for Iraq's new President?
Fouad Massoum was elected President of Iraq in July and he is trying to bring back order to a nation split by terrorism.
According to the Press Trust of India, "Iraq‘s new president has charged the deputy speaker of parliament Haider al-Ibadi with forming a new government in the next 30 days."
To maintain peace among rival factions in Iraq, the country's government is headed by representatives of the three largest Iraqi groups.
The Wire reports, "For more than a decade, an informal agreement has held whereby Iraq's President is a Kurd, it's Prime Minister a Shiite, and the speaker of its parliament a Sunni."
The new government is opposed by the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) which has taken over a large part of the country.
According to the New Statesman, ISIS "is among the fastest-growing and richest terrorist groups of all time. After initially funding its efforts with extortion, smuggling and private donations, it literally struck gold in June when it made off with $400m in cash and gold from the central bank in Mosul" FULL POST
