Researchers Todd Johnson and Peter Crossing at The Center for the Study of Global Christianity estimate that $39 billion will be embezzled globally by Christian religious leaders in 2014 while only $35 billion will be spent on foreign missions. This alarming statistic appears in the Status of Global Mission chart in the January issue of the International Bulletin of Missionary Research.

Religious criminals date back to biblical times. The Apostle Peter warned the early church of these criminals. One of the best biblical descriptions is found in 2 Peter 2:3.

The New Living Translation says, "In their greed they will make up clever lies to get hold of your money. But God condemned them long ago, and their destruction will not be delayed." The King James Version says, "And through covetousness shall they with feigned words make merchandise of you: whose judgment now of a long time lingereth not, and their damnation slumbereth not."

These two translations warn that greedy criminals will infiltrate churches for financial gain and that they will use the Church as a marketplace for their false teaching.

  3. Pray for these criminals to make restitution for their crimes.
  4. Pray for whistleblowers to boldly expose fraud.
  5. Pray for church members not to lose faith when corrupt church personnel are exposed.
