Today is Antonin Scalia's 77th birthday. Scalia is one of the more outspoken conservatives on the United States Supreme Court. President Ronald Reagan appointed Scalia to the Supreme Court in 1986.
Scalia has rejected the argument that abortion is a constitutional right. In 1992 Scalia wrote in his Planned Parenthood v. Casey opinion: "The States may, if they wish, permit abortion on demand, but the Constitution does not require them to do so. The permissibility of abortion, and the limitations upon it, are to be resolved like most important questions in our democracy: by citizens trying to persuade one another and then voting." This year the United States Supreme Court will decide on the constitutionality of gay marriage. A headline from the Washington Times newspaper sums up the dilemma for the court: Gay marriage ruling may rival Roe v. Wade in turmoil.
Join us in praying for Scalia and the rest of the United States Supreme Court justices and their staffs. Pray that God will give them divine wisdom and discernment to know right from wrong and to decide justly in the cases they hear.
