Go To Hell

text size A A A

How many times have you heard someone say these words to someone in a fit of anger? How often have you spoken these words to someone? These words sound very harsh and offensive.

Hell as defined by Webster: a place where souls are believed to survive after death 2: the place or state of punishment for the wicked after death: the home of evil spirits 3: a place or condition of misery or wickedness 4: a place or state of great confusion, disorder, or destruction.

Different religious belief depicts hell in many different ways, however, none of them depicts hell as an inviting or preferred place to go. Judaism’s view of hell more closely resembles purgatory. However, the pain the soul experiences is not a physical one. It has been compared to psychological anguish, shame and healing upon reviewing the history of one’s life in a body, and how it wasted opportunities to serve God. http://jewsforjudaism.org/knowledge/articles/belief-in-heaven-is-fundamental-to-judaism/

The Catechism of the Catholic Church states: "The teaching of the Church affirms the existence of hell and its eternity. Immediately after death, the souls of those who die in a state of mortal sin descend into hell, where they suffer the punishments of hell, ‘eternal fire.’ https://www.catholic.com/tract/the-hell-there-is

Christians believe that hell exists for those who fail to repent and accept Christ as their savior while on earth. This differs from some religions where a second chance is given after death such as purgatory. Most Christians view of Hell is that it is a place of fire, torment, and eternal punishment. Whew, none of these sounds like hell is a five-star resort or preferred vacation spot.

What does the Bible say about hell? Matt 13:40 As the weeds are collected and burned in the fire, so will it be at the end of the age. 41 The Son of Man will send out His angels, and they will weed out of His kingdom every cause of sin and all who practice lawlessness. 42 And they will throw them into the fiery furnace, where there will be weeping and gnashing of teeth. KJV

Mark 9:43 And if thy hand offend thee, cut it off: it is better for thee to enter into life maimed than having two hands to go into hell, into the fire that never shall be quenched: 44 Where their worm dieth not, and the fire is not quenched. KJV

In hell, you will be able to see, feel, speak and remember your past. Let’s look at the story of Lazarus and the rich man. Luke 16:19-31 Lazarus was a poor man who sat at the gate of the rich man, hoping to get the crumbs that fell from the rich man table. They both died and Lazarus was taken to the bosom of Abraham. However, the rich man fate was as follows: Luke:16:23 And in hell he lifts up his eyes, being in torments, and seeth Abraham afar off, and Lazarus in his bosom.24 And he cried and said, Father Abraham, have mercy on me, and send Lazarus, that he may dip the tip of his finger in water, and cool my tongue; for I am tormented in this flame. According to the Bible, the rich man was able to see (he lifted up his eyes), he had a voice, (he cried Father Abraham) he had feelings (he was in torment) and his memory was intact, ( 28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.

Well, that doesn’t sound like a recommendation. He is not recommending anyone to ‘go to hell”. Let’s think about this. Do you really want anyone you know, even your worst enemy to “go to hell”? I don’t want anyone I know, not even remotely to “go to hell”. Some ask if God is so good how could he send someone to hell? Well, God doesn’t send anyone to hell. It is a choice the person makes. In fact, God states 2 Peter 3:8-9 8But, beloved, be not ignorant of this one thing, that one day is with the Lord as a thousand years and a thousand years as one day. 9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.

God words state Deut 30:19 19 I call heaven and earth to record this day against you, that I have set before you life and death, blessing and cursing: therefore choose life, that both thou and thy seed may live: 20 That thou mayest love the Lord thy God, and that thou mayest obey his voice, and that thou mayest cleave unto him: for he is thy life and the length of thy days: that thou mayest dwell in the land which the Lord sware unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give them.

Let me encourage you to obey the voice of God. Don't go to hell, but choose life.
