Merry Christmas and Happy New Year

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you. Well here we are at the end of another year. The older you get the faster time seems to pass by. You celebrate the New Year and make all sorts of promises to yourself of things to pursue for that year. If you are not careful you blink and before you know it the year is gone. People also have a lot of “traditions” they follow. Some of these “traditions have been passed down from generation to generation but sometimes we don’t even remember why we do them – we just know that we do.

For example, most African American celebrate the New Year with a special meal. The menu may include Black-eyed peas, greens (mustard, Turnips or Spinach, ham and or fried chicken, cornbread) and candied jams etc. The thinking behind this tradition is certain foods represent certain things i.e black-eyes peas luck or favor, greens for dollars, and cornbread for gold. Yeah. I don’t know why I follow this tradition I just know I somehow feel guilty if I don’t have certain of these items on my table on New Year Day.

Another old folk saying is, if you start out with a dirty, cluttered house your house will be like that for the rest of the year. So as the end of the year draws near I find myself going through the rooms in the house dusting and cleaning to ensure that the house at least appears neat. Between the end of the year and the first month of the New Year I also go through kitchen cabinets and freezer checking for expired food or “stuff” in the freezer that I no longer recognize.

As it is in the natural so it is in the spirit. The year end is a time of taking stock or inventory of what you did or did not accomplish during the year. What vows or commitment did you make? Did you really try to keep them? Which tests prove to be the most challenging to you in your spiritual walk? Did you experience hurt, disappointment, betrayal or loss? Most likely you experience some challenges, loss and disappointment. Most likely you did not accomplish everything on your to do list. You probably did some of the things that you made up your mind not to do. Don’t lose heart. No one is perfect yet we STRIVE, reach for perfection.

Now is the time to steal away to the secret place and allow the Holy Spirit to shine his light into your life and show you everything the enemy don’t want you to see. It is time to take spiritual inventory and check for those “expired items and stuff” you no longer need. Those things that are causing clutter in your life. Now is the time to search your heart and see who you need to forgive including yourself for past mistakes. Remember Forgiveness is for your benefit. Not for the benefit of the person who has wronged you. Watch for my blog soon on “Forgiveness”

I encourage you to release old hurts, pain, free yourself from shame, walk away from bitterness, let go of envy, jealousy and back biting. Release sorrow and deep pain. Let go of the old because God has the “new thing” waiting for you. Isaiah 43:19 Behold, I will do a new thing; now it shall spring forth; shall ye not know it? I will even make a way in the wilderness, and rivers in the desert. “For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11. “Look at the nations and watch— and be utterly amazed. For I am going to do something in your days that you would not believe, even if you were told.” Habakkuk 1:5. “Because of the Lord’s great love we are not consumed, for his compassions never fail. They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness. I say to myself, “The Lord is my portion; therefore I will wait for him.” Lamentations 3: 22-24

 SPEAK THE ANSWER NOT THE PROBLEM. THE ANSWER IS THE WORD OF GOD. Heavenly father we come to you with thanksgiving and gratitude in our hearts. Thank you for every test, trial and victory obtained through your word and the shed Blood of Jesus. Give us strength to release the old i.e every hurt, disappointment, grief, sorrow, betrayal, regrets, pain and whatever comes to slow down our walk with you and in you. Search me lord and if you find anything that should not be there, take it out. We now passionately embrace all that you have for us as we pursue your heart and seek your face. We desire all that you have for us and we receive it by faith. We give forgiveness that we may experience forgiveness. We change our garments for you have turned our mourning into joy. We receive the peace that you have ordained for us. We rest in the safety and protection of your wings. We are not afraid of the unknown for your word declares that you will help us, hold our hand and be with us. We recommit our minds, bodies, soul, spirit, will and present it to you as the living sacrifice. Let the fire fall fresh upon the sacrifice and burn everything that is not of you and leave nothing but the pure gold. We pray that the fire on the altar of our heart be kindled and rekindled and never, never burn out. For this cause we bow our knees to you, lift our hands and voices and say BLESS THE NAME OF OUR LORD, OUR SAVIOR, OUR GOD, OUR KING FOREVER AND FOREVER. AMEN.
