That Was Then, This is Now

On two occasions, I have read the Bible from cover to cover. I recall my experience upon reading the book of Exodus. As I read Exodus 27:21 through Exodus 40, I had a revelation about God’s mercy and grace.

These are my observations of those chapters. In these chapters, God gives Moses the Ten Commandments. He gives instructions for preparing the altar. He gave very specific instructions about every step in preparing the altar. He described the length, height, material etc. Nothing was left to chance or interpretation.

God gave specific instructions about who would serve and minister at the altar. He described exactly how the duties were to be carried out. In chapter 29 God describes how the consecration of the priest was to take place. Chapter 30 God talks about the altar of incense, how to prepare it, the anointing oil and who was to administer it.

Aaron’s name is mentioned at least 33 times between Exodus 27:21 and Exodus 31. The following are some of the things that were spoken about God’s plans for Aaron:

  1. Exodus 28:3 And thou shalt speak unto all that are wise hearted, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, that they may make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him, that he may minister unto me in the priest's office
  2. Exodus 28: 41 And thou shalt put them upon Aaron thy brother, and his sons with him; and shalt anoint them, and consecrate them, and sanctify them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.
  3. Exodus 29: 7 Then shalt thou take the anointing oil, and pour it upon his head, and anoint him. 8 And thou shalt bring his sons, and put coats upon them
  4. .Exodus 29: 44 And I will sanctify the tabernacle of the congregation, and the altar: I will sanctify also both Aaron and his sons, to minister to me in the priest's office
  5. Exodus 30: 30 And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office. 31 And thou shalt speak unto the children of Israel, saying, This shall be an holy anointing oil unto me throughout your generations

Exodus 32 reveals that Aaron had succumbed to the wishes of the people and made a golden calf for the people to worship. The people had quickly forgotten the victory God gave them and how he brought them out. When I read this chapter, I was amazed. I started flipping back and forth rereading Exodus 27:21 through Exodus 32. I ponder in my heart why God who sees all, knows all, was giving these direct specific instructions about anointing Aaron and his sons and how he would use Aaron while Aaron was doing ungodly things.

Exodus 40:13 And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments, and anoint him, and sanctify him; that he may minister unto me in the priest's office. 14 And thou shalt bring his sons, and clothe them with coats: 15 And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father that they may minister unto me in the priest's office: for their anointing shall surely be an everlasting, priesthood throughout their generations.16 Thus did Moses: according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he.

THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW. I reflected on this and pondered the word of God. I thought about my life when I was in a backslidden state. I thought about the relationship I had with God and how far I had fallen from his grace. I remember when I recommitted my life to Christ how often Satan would intimidate me to keep me from moving forward in God. I would often wonder where would I be in God if I had never backslidden.

THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW. The Holy Ghost minister to me through these passages of scripture. If you have never had a great fall, never made a terrible mistake or done anything that brought shame to your name; you will not be able to relate to this. If you have been in this place and felt God would never use you again, never anoint you again; this message is for you. God does sees all, knows all and he does care. He has not changed his mind about his plans for your life. He knew the very moment you would fall, he also knew the very moment you would repent and turn again to him. He is waiting for you to come into alignment with his plans.

THAT WAS THEN, THIS IS NOW. When Satan or anyone he uses comes to you to accuse or condemn you; rise up in the Holy Ghost and declare THAT WAS THEN THIS IS NOW.

SPEAK THE ANSWER NOT THE PROBLEM. THE ANSWER IS THE WORD OF GOD. Heavenly Father, thank you for your mercy and grace, the shed Blood of Jesus that cleanse and make whole. Your word declares that if we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. Galatians 5:1 KJV Stand fast therefore in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again with the yoke of bondage. John 8:36 KJV If the Son therefore shall make you free, ye shall be free indeed.

We receive and accept all the redemptive works of the cross for our lives. We are not ashamed to admit our mistakes and because of your love and grace, we are now stronger than ever before. We declare that we are overcomers by the blood of the lamb and the word of our testimony. Anoint us to be like Jonah and make a three days journey in one day that we may redeem the time. We receive your anointing to run freely and do the things you have ordained us to do. Our past shall never hold us back again. We are mounting up like the eagle soaring high in the sky. You have redeemed us from the hand of the enemy, broken the snare and we have made our escape. For by thee I have run through a troop: by my God have I leaped over a wall. We are ever grateful for your plans for our lives and we come into alignment with your will. We say to the enemy Shut your mouth Satan; Jesus died to give us the victory. That was then this is now. Now father, make us a terror to the enemy. Help us to tear down Satan’s kingdom and to exalt your kingdom.
