The Church Should Lead the Charge in Garner & Brown Case

text size A A A

For weeks the world headlines has been focused on the social injustice against Blacks as the Grand Jury failed again to indict a White police officer for the death of an unarmed Black man.

Protestors have been taking to the streets almost daily and in growing numbers. The world is watching and Blacks, White, Hispanic etc are willing to come together for a common cause. Various groups are coming together to form these protests.

This is the opportunity for the churches to step up and take the lead. Just marching is not enough. Prayer must take place. The people are hungry for direction. They need a true leader to emerge. This is the church opportunity to open up the doors of the church and point the people to the only one that can comfort and change.

I know someone is saying “pray, you need to do more than pray”. Yes, you need to pray and fast, receive instruction and then act. 2 Chronicles 7:14 KJVIfmypeople, which are called by my name, shall humble themselves, and pray, and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin, and will heal their land. Proverbs 3:6 KJVIn all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths. Those with an ear to hear God must seek God to receive divine direction to change the course of history. The people are hungry for direction.

2 Chronicles 20:12 KJV O our God, wilt thou not judge them? for we have no might against this great company that cometh against us; neither know we what to do: but our eyes are upon thee. Racial injustice has been engrained in our society. It is like a cancer that we think is in remission only to see it return even more aggressive than before. We need people that understand the system, are part of the system to begin to dismantle the system from inside the system.

Genesis 11:6 KJVAnd the LORD said, Behold, the people is one, and they have all one language; and this they begin to do: and now nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. The church has a charge to unite the people not just to march but to come together and strategize for change. The church can form groups to develop plans for change and an action plan to activate and bring about that change. The church understands that divine instructions, strategies, and methods is a necessary component of that change. The church can be the catalyst to unite the people to speak one language; the language of liberty for all.

It has been suggested that police officers wear body cameras. In spite of the fact that this incident was captured on video, in areas where this has been instituted there has been a noticeable drop in police misconduct/brutality complaints. Outlaw any restraining efforts that will cut off breathing i.e. choke hold. There is a need to review and change policy governing complaints of brutality. The policy addressing repeated complaints for police brutality should be reviewed and changed. Every department in every city should reflect the community that they serve.

How do you bring about transparency in the Grand Jury process? What happens during this process? What evidence is presented, what area is focused on? What criteria are they using? Surely, something is amiss when there is video evidence clearly showing a man life being snuffed out due to his airways being restricted “choke hold”. As a former worker with DCFS and as a mental health therapist I learned that there is a right and wrong way to ask questions. You ask open ended questions i.e. why, what, when, where versus close ended questions i.e. did you do, did you say, did you hear, did you see. The answer will vary depending on how the question is asked. So again, what criteria was used in the gathering and presentation of evidence in this case?

As I observed the different response between Ferguson and New York I asked myself “what changed” During protest of Ferguson verdict we watched in dismay and horror as protesters took to the street rioting, destroying property, burning down churches, stores, and looting etc. The protesters in New York were even bigger but no rioting, destruction etc. The group was larger but peaceful and their non-violent approach spoke louder than the violence. I am convinced that intercessors across the nation began to pray and that brought change.

SPEAK THE ANSWER NOT THE PROBLEM. THE ANSWER IS THE WORD OF GOD. God we acknowledge you and lend not to our own understanding, wisdom, education, experience but lift up our eyes to you. We humble ourselves and ask for divine knowledge, revelation, skill, wisdom and direction from you. Our hearts are heavy due to the continual injustice that we experience. Your word gives us assurance Fear thou not; for I am with thee: be not dismayed; for I am thy God: I will strengthen thee; yea, I will help thee; yea, I will uphold thee with the right hand of my righteousness. We pray for our pastors and leaders that they will have an ear to listen, eyes be enlighten, willing hands and hearts to receive and do what you instruct them to do. This is what the LORD says: "At just the right time, I will respond to you. On the day of salvation I will help you. I will protect you and give you to the people as my covenant with them. Through you I will reestablish the land of Israel and assign it to its own people again Isaiah 49:8 NCV. Through your church change will come. Cause our pastors to come out from behind the pulpit and lead the charge to change what is wrong. Give us Daniels, Esther, people of wisdom, influence and power hidden away for such a time as this to come forth and declare justice and righteousness. Let the doors of your churches be open as strong tower that the people can run in and find safety. We acknowledge divine instructions come from you, you know the inside scoop, the plans of the enemy and you teach our hands to war. Our eyes are on you because we don’t know what to do. Jehovah Missi our captain lead us in the way to go. As it was in days past, so it is now we trust you for strategic plans to change policy and procedures on our behalf. We pray for one language, one purpose, the voice of unity for your word declare that when people come together speaking one language and with one purpose nothing will be restrained from them, which they have imagined to do. We dare to imagine a nation where all mankind is treated equally. You are on the side of the righteous, the down trodden, the weak and helpless. You are our God, defense, strong tower, shepherd and we are totally dependent on you. So now, thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ. We walk humbly and fearfully before you, bowing down to worship, giving you all the glory for thine O Lord is the greatness, and the power, and the glory, and the victory, and the majesty: for all that is in the heaven and in the earth is thine; thine is the kingdom, O Lord, and thou art exalted as head above all. Both riches and honour come of thee, and thou reignest over all; and in thine hand is power and might; and in thine hand it is to make great, and to give strength unto all. ALL POWER BELONGS TO OUR GOD.
