A Pastor Responds To The Sandy Hook Elementary School Tragedy

text size A A A

Today, I have been deeply moved by the amount of people I have had coming to my blog seeking answers about the shooting that happened at Sandy Hook Elementary School. My lists of encouraging bible verses about strength, inspirational quotes for hard times, and Christian quotes about heaven have been going viral. It has moved me to write an article specifically for those that are facing this tragedy and need to know how to overcome and never give up.

If you never give up you can overcome anything!

I am no expert, but I am an overcomer. I have overcame divorce, failed relationships, financial ruin, and the loss of credibility, respect, and what I thought at the time, the loss of my vocation. I am not rich, nor am I a world renown speaker, author, or pastor. I am just a balding man trying to get to heaven with a few things to lay at my master’s feet. However because I never gave up I have overcame all these things and now have a good and contented life.

The struggles that I have went through do not compare to what those hurting parents and teachers are faced with today. All I know is that the same God that raised Jesus from the dead, the same Jesus that restored my life, will restore their lives as well. If they will allow Him to draw close, He will comfort, strengthen, and give them the ability to overcome even this.

The strength to never give up comes from Jesus

How did I find the strength to never give up? Well in all honesty, I didn’t! I had my small part to play, but the real credit and glory goes to my best friend, Jesus Christ. He never left me or forsook me. He was always there, even when I was mad and angry and told Him to take a long walk on a short pier, forgetting He walks on water, He still didn’t leave me. He didn’t give up on me.

God is no respecter of persons. He loves you and wants you to have an awesome life, just like He does me. I know that it may be hard to believe right at this second, but it is true. It may take you time to see this, but rest assured that He will never leave you nor forsake you. Some things we will never have answers for the questions of why. I still don't have all the answers myself. But I know this to be true.

Psalm 34:18
The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, And saves such as have a contrite spirit.

My heart breaks for the people that have been affected by this tragedy. They did not ask for it and it could not come at a worse time right before Christmas. I know that there is no consolation that can come with words at this point, but just know that Christian people from around the world are praying for you. As a pastor, my heart breaks because of the pain that has been inflicted upon you.

Today, I and thousands of others weep with those who weep.
