Now Will YOU Stop Selling YOUR Birthright?

text size A A A

Well the election is over and my heart is both grieved and at peace. It wouldn’t have mattered if the outcome had been different and the other political party’s candidate had won. My heart still would have been grieved. Why? Because people would have been celebrating the victory of evil.

Why you may ask, is my heart at peace? Because tomorrow morning I will wake up knowing that I did not sell my vote for false promises. I did not give my birthright away for a bowl of stew.

Let me show you what I am talking about.

Esau Selling His Birthright For A Bowl Of Stew.

Hebrews 12:16-17
New Living Translation (NLT)
16 Make sure that no one is immoral or godless like Esau, who traded his birthright as the firstborn son for a single meal. 17 You know that afterward, when he wanted his father’s blessing, he was rejected. It was too late for repentance, even though he begged with bitter tears.

Esau was the firstborn in of Isaac’s sons. As such he was destined to be the leader of the family and enjoy the blessings that his father would bestow upon the first born. However we see in Genesis chapter 25 that Esau sold his birthright for a bowl of stew.

Esau Sells His Birthright

29 Now Jacob cooked a stew; and Esau came in from the field, and he was weary. 30 And Esau said to Jacob, “Please feed me with that same red stew, for I am weary.” Therefore his name was called Edom.[d]

31 But Jacob said, “Sell me your birthright as of this day.”

32 And Esau said, “Look, I am about to die; so what is this birthright to me?”

33 Then Jacob said, “Swear to me as of this day.”

So he swore to him, and sold his birthright to Jacob. 34 And Jacob gave Esau bread and stew of lentils; then he ate and drank, arose, and went his way. Thus Esau despised his birthright.

The people of God also have a birthright. That birthright is also the call to lead, the call to bring change, the call to speak as the oracles of God. People should be following us as leaders not us following the world. That birthright also includes the blessings that our Heavenly Father would want to bestow upon us. However more times than not, over the last 33 years that I have been a believer in Jesus, I have seen the people of God sell their birthright for a bowl of political stew. They are made promises, they are told that if they compromise their beliefs that the person they compromise for will be good for them. This has not been true.

This year, I said no. I refused to vote for the lesser of two evils and from every election from now on, I am going to say no when asked to vote for evil. Why? Because my birthright was bought for a price that is too expensive to sell. It was bought with the precious blood of Jesus.

Tonight I go to sleep at peace. I finally led by example. I know that my Heavenly Father is pleased.

My prayer is that this election teaches Christians from both political persuasions to stop selling their birthright for political stew and to start leading by example, stop compromising their values and convictions and start looking to Jesus who is the only hope of the world.

Blessings!
