We spend July 4th with cookouts and parties and fireworks but have we have really forgotten the meaning of the holiday?
We fought repression from England to become a free country and some 200 years later we are still oppressed by our own government.
Do we really understand what this Independence Day means to people?
I like Bill Pullman's meaning of Independence Day from the movie id4
"Good morning. Good morning. In less than an hour, aircraft from here will join others from around the world, and you will be launching the largest aerial battle in the history of mankind. Mankind that word should have new meaning for all of us today. We can't be consumed by our petty differences any more. We will be united in our common interest. Perhaps it's fate that today is the 4th of July, and you will once again be fighting for our freedom. Not from tyranny, oppression, or persecution, but from annihilation. We're fighting for our right to live, to exist and should we win the day, the 4th of July will no longer be known as an American holiday, but as the day when the world declared in one voice, 'We will not go quietly into the night! We will not vanish without a fight! We're going to live on, we're going to survive.' Today we celebrate our independence day!"
President Thomas Whitmore
July 4th, 1996
Everything he said in his speech in Id4 is true. We are facing annihilation from N. Korea, Iran and we are consumed by our petty differences both foreign and domestic.
The worst part of this is that everything thing we fought far to become a country and the rights we were given by that fight have been slowly taken away from us since the tragic events of Sept. 11, 2001.
And we people (remember this country is supposed to be by the people, for the people) have let our government take away our rights one at a time. It’s time for us yes us to wake up and remember the speech from Id4 .
So when you’re cooking out on Wednesday or sitting watching the fireworks display take a moment to think about what the holiday means. As 911 proved when the buildings came down our flag was still there.
Happy 4th of July America
