Where Did the Time Go?

Photo: Flickr/zoutedrop

Anniversaries sometimes challenge us to re-evaluate our lives and examine our priorities.

Twenty-one years ago on this day (December 10, 1993) I graduated from college. My parents were there to witness the occasion when I received my diploma.

Twenty-one years ago!! Where did the time go?

During that time 7,670 days have passed and I could have started a family, pursued a different career path, taken on different hobbies, or participated in mission trips.

Instead my life was marked by numerous failures as I often made poor decisions through trial and error.

If I found a time machine and could travel back in time to give my younger self some wisdom, it would be this: (1) Your habits shape your life. Do whatever it takes to end bad habits by replacing them with good habits. (2) Make friends and be accountable to them.

One of the challenges of being a single is that it is easy to become self absorbed. FULL POST

Christian Post Blog Section Has Cat-Free Facebook Page

Photo: Pixabay - Public Domain

Facebook is good for sharing cat pictures, jokes, interesting videos, spiritual truths and more cat photos.

So while I'm in a joking mood, here's one of my favorite Facebook jokes:

I'm going to create a Facebook Account with the name "Nobody"
So when somebody posts something stupid I can say "Nobody Likes This!"

On a more serious note, the Christian Post Blog section now has a Facebook page. You can like the page and follow the new posts being shared there.

The CP Blog section also has a presence on other social media: Twitter, Pinterest, and Storify.

* So you might be wondering why I put "Cat-Free" in the title of this story. Simple Answer: It makes the headline less boring. FULL POST

Christian Post Blog Section Has New Manager

Career changes happen.

After three years of overseeing The Christian Post blog section, I have left to write a book. Stephanie Howell is taking my place.

If you have questions or ever need assistance with a blog, please send your questions and comments to blog@christianpost.com

I would like to thank all of the CP bloggers for sharing your writing talents. I have learned a lot from reading your posts. In the future I hope to read some of the books written by authors that blog here.

I especially want to thank The Christian Post for giving me a job in 2011. I remember visiting CP in Washington D.C. and being impressed with diversity in the office as Christians of different ethnic backgrounds worked together to advance the Gospel.

There is one piece of advice I would like to leave with each of you: "Let your conversation be always full of grace ..." - Colossians 4:6 NIV FULL POST

Student praying at See You at the Pole.

One of my favorite annual events occurred last week. On Wednesday Christian students from around the world gathered to pray at their school flagpoles. The See You at the Pole Facebook page has pictures of participants from ten countries on six continents.

Here are several See You at the Pole 2014 videos posted on YouTube.

Not a Typo: Jesus Wore Scandals

Photo: Pixabay - Public Domain
Jesus wore both sandals and scandals.

God is glorified in our imperfections ... and spelling mistakes.

In a recent blog post about church dress codes I accidentally wrote, "The Bible doesn't say much about how people dressed during Jesus' earthly ministry. Jesus wore scandals (Matthew 3:11) and a tunic (John 19:23)."

My spelling error was still truthful. Jesus not only wore sandals, He wore our scandals too.

1 Peter 2:24 NLT says, "He personally carried our sins in his body on the cross so that we can be dead to sin and live for what is right. By his wounds you are healed."

More than 400 years before Peter wrote that verse, another Bible author foretold this amazing event.

"We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to our own way; and the Lord has laid on him the iniquity of us all." - Isaiah 53:6 NIV FULL POST

Church Dress Codes

Curiosity question for the people that read my blog: Does your church have a dress code?

Russian Orthodox monastery with dress code.

After describing her church background and encountering casual dress, a commenter on Yahoo Answers asks, "Your boss is more deserving of "professional attire" than God?"

Pastor Art responded, "I've been to some churches which are primariy attended by African Americans and they tend to dress up for church. Churches which are primarily attended by white folks or by a mixture of races tend to not dress up... There is nothing in the Bible about 'wearing your Sunday best'. In fact the Bible tells us not to show favoritism towards those who are well dressed. When I was a Pastor on staff of churches in Illinois or New York, I always wore a suit and tie on Sundays." Video Streaming: Learning From Apple's Streaming Mistakes

Today the Super Bowl of technology events took place at the Flint Center for the Performing Arts in Cupertino, California. Apple's CEO Tim Cook introduced the fascinating new iWatch and iPhone 6.

Before today's announcements, blogger Dan Rayburn reported, "Internet Traffic Records Could Be Broken This Week Thanks To Apple, NFL, Sony, Xbox, EA and Others."

But today's Apple event was chaotic. The New York Times headline truthfully reports, "Apple’s Live-Streaming Is Terrible." The video stream was restricted to the Safari web browser.

Interested technology enthusiasts overwhelmed Apple's live stream and the company has taken a lot of heat on social media. I've seen church conference video streams that looked more professional.

Live video streaming has been a long work in progress. I've participated in live streamed events since the 1990s and the video quality has improved dramatically since the pioneering days of webcasting. Once upon a time we had to watch videos that were a little bigger than a postage stamp. FULL POST

What Happened to Common Decency? Internet Trolls Hate Truett Cathy

Photo: Flickr/m01229 - Creative Commons

Christian businessman Truett Cathy died this morning. Chick-fil-A's Facebook page reports, "Grieving the loss of our founder Truett Cathy, who passed away today. He was 93. Please keep the Cathy family in your prayers."

Thousands of the restaurant chain's fans have praised Cathy for developing a popular chicken sandwich and for sticking to his Christian principles.

Meanwhile a smaller number of critics revealed disgust on social media because Cathy was a supporter of traditional marriage and donated to Family Research Council. Here is a sample of criticism on Twitter:

As Christians we can pray for the people making these disparaging remarks. God can change their hearts. FULL POST

Securing iCloud: How to Protect Yourself From Hacking

Photo: Flickr/FutUndBeidl - Creative Commons

In response to the leaking of numerous naked celebrity photos online, Apple Computer addressed the controversy:

We wanted to provide an update to our investigation into the theft of photos of certain celebrities. When we learned of the theft, we were outraged and immediately mobilized Apple’s engineers to discover the source. Our customers’ privacy and security are of utmost importance to us. After more than 40 hours of investigation, we have discovered that certain celebrity accounts were compromised by a very targeted attack on user names, passwords and security questions, a practice that has become all too common on the Internet. None of the cases we have investigated has resulted from any breach in any of Apple’s systems including iCloud® or Find my iPhone. We are continuing to work with law enforcement to help identify the criminals involved. FULL POST
